talk about openning a can of worms...

Think everyone will have their favorite products. I use the mequires range, shampoo, claybar, then scratch-x, then their 3 stage polish and wax set.

The "simple but effective" way is to mix a drop of MER polish in with the MER shampoo and you'll end up with a clean and polished car in one go.

Also try drying the whole car off with the window shining cloths from Lidl.

Simple, effective and it works.

Depends on how 'overboard' you want to go. The Meguiars range is pretty good, doesn't leave a white powder residue like Autoglym, that said the Autoglym Super Resin Polish is a really good product.

The Dodo Juice range of waxes are really good, I have Banana Armour (silly names) on the MG, and after 2 layers, it's protecting the car really well, water beading off superbly.

For a detailed answer, go to detailingworld, there'll be everything you'll ever want to know about cleaning, sorry, detailing a car, be carefull though, I spend £00s after visiting that site and learning quite a bit.

Am I alone in that I never polish the car?

Decent wash with a good car shampoo, squeedgy it dry, then drive drive drive. My car is blue and it looks great.

Things gets mucky after 500yrds anyway and you have to do it again.

Hi Mark

For the price, I don't think you can go far wrong with Meguiars products. The finish below is how Meguiars NXT Techwax brings up Moonraker Black, without the use of a clay bar kit.

Simon.

My 2 pennies worth.
Got to say, autoglym gives a good shine but leaves lots of white powder but was happy with it for years. However I've now used Zymol cleaner wax for a couple of years and its easy to use, smells great and gives a great shine. If I'm feeling like I have more time to waste (rather than drive it hehe) then I put PS21 hard wax over the top for the extra depth of shine.

Talk to the chap at this place: www.cleanyourcar.co.uk. I've discovered the secret of detailing clay and my paint has gone from good to mirror. My wife was following me in the rain and she said the car looked amazing the way the water was beading and rolling off the paint.

Tell the chap at the above site exactly what you are trying to detail and he will advise from his range. I've also learned there is a big difference between polish and wax and how they should be used.

I can vouch for Simon's shiny Cerb (not easy to say that!)

Probably the best I've seen.

Hi there Mark,
Not sad talking to your car in the morning unless you've been sleeping with it all night.
I keep checking my garage to see if you've secretly brought it back.
Ray

Have you had a dry run in it yet (roads that is)

A small tip for those that might be interested

When you apply polish on a hot day, it can be a pig to polish off properly. Polish off first with a damp cloth and then again with a dry cloth. You can do the old two cloths 'Karate Kid' trick when you do this, and all polish / water marks disappear

Until recently I have used Meguirs, Autoglym, turlewax but have just started to use Carnuba wax from the Polishing Company - http://www.thepolishingcompany.com/foryourcar.html

Dead easy to go on and take off. Waxing / polishing takes half the time it used to... smile

Have also started to use wheel sealant from - http://www.poorboysworld.com/wheel-sealant.htm Takes ages to put on as you have to get the wheels spotless, and you only have to do it every 6 months or so. But after going out in the wet at the weekend it only a couple of minutes a wheel to get the crap off now smile
