I pick up my new EOS 40D in just 2½ weeks!!!
Discussion
After pondering for many weeks on this, I've finally decided to get a lovely EOS 40D to replace my now broken EOS 300D. I need to get the 300D repaired however the fact that my 30)D broke was the real decider to get the 40D.
The best thing is the price in Dubai where i'm off to in just over two weeks. Just €800 or about £550! That's £200 cheaper than anywhere in the UK or here in Austria!
I can't wait....I love Christmas presents to me
Just need to get a lovely new lens to go with it, but I'm not sure what. Any ideas?
Right now I only have two (18-55mm standard wide angle and 55-200mm narrow Canon lens). I also have a nice 430EX speedlite. Most of the stuff I take photos of is wide angle, but I don't want a fixed lens. I'd a zoom lens....

Eh?May I suggest the 50mm f1.8 prime lens. It's superb and you never get bored of f1.8
(and best of all, relatively cheap...<£100)

For replacements:
Canon 17-40mm f4 L (about £480) - nice wide angle L thats not super-expensive.
Canon 17-55mm f2.8 (about £625) - some people go nuts for these

For ultra-wide:
Canon 10-22mm (about £470) - well respected but expensive. Though if you can get one in Dubai..
Sigma 10-20 (about £290) - cheaper option, but some people really rate it. Either way, with HSM and being part of Sigma's EX range, seems a lot of lens for the money

The Canon 17-55mm f2.8 looks rather nice and seems to suit the 40D nicely. I'll check out the prices while I'm out in Dubai. I've got three weeks of pure holiday bliss and relaxation so plenty of time to do a little shopping although the list is getting quite long and expensive!

If thats the sort of area then perhaps you may want to consider :

Canon 16-35mm f2.8 L mk2 (about £1040) - Expensive, but looks lovely

Canon 24-70mm f2.8 L (about £770) - Referred to as 'the brick' on some sites, great reputation. Not as wide though...
Canon 24-105mm f4 L (about £650) - Possibly the ideal walk-about lens ? Again, not as wide...
Just a quick fyi: That 17-55 f2.8 is EF-S, so if you were ever to upgrade to a full frame body (how much are 5D's in Dubai ?

) then it wouldn't work.Cheers.

My friend bought a 5D recently just before a wedding I went to in Croatia. The 5D is a stunning bit of kit, but the price just is just that bit too much, especially since I have to budget for a lens on top. Maybe for my next SLR. The 300D lasted me 4 years so that's not bad going.
I just hope it doesn't cost too much to fix. I think it's an electrical fault since I heard a rattle inside the body before it died. Maybe something shorted??? It's still a fantastic beginners piece of kit.

These are £555 on one stop digital and there is £35 cashback from canon, bargain in my eyes for L glass

I decided to buy a 24-105 with it. I'll later get a 16-35 as suggested above, along with a 100-400 and a 50mm f1.4 and the 100mm macro.
My reason for this slightly odd lens selection is precisely because I am looking to buy a 5Dii too when it's released, and these lenses will work well across both bodies.
I tried a 24-70 but it's so heavy that it's not really a good walk around lens IMO. The 17-40 looks good, but as I'll use the super-wide indoors a lot, the faster 16-35 is worth the higher price to me.
I have a 24-105L and it's excellent. I got it as a whitebox discount item from Park cameras (i guess it was a demo item). It's good but still leaves me wondering if i'd have been better off with the 24-70L2.8 as the IS isn't much cop and the F4 can be a pain in low light. However i bought it for outdoor stuff so it suits me fine most of the time, but consioder what you'd use it for most.

If you're on a bit of a tight budget, may I recommend the 17-85 IS as a replacement for the standard 18-55
I've just bought a SH one off ebay for £220, I know it's not "L" glass, but it's a hell of a step up on the standard lens, and has more range as well.
Ok it may not fit in with your plans for a 5D as its EFS, but you could always sell it and get your money back if you buy right to start with
I have the 17-85 as well, can't say i'm blown-away by it. The wide end on mine can have soft-corners and significant distortion, but some of that can be remedied by stopping it down a touch. It also seems to have developed significant barrel creep.

On the up side its very fast to focus (ring USM), no rotating front element means that its a step up from the 18-55 if you are using filters.
If you can find it cheap / as part of a kit then imo its a reasnoable deal. For the retail price then i'd also look at the sigma / tamron f2.8 options before making a choice.
If i had the choice then i'd go for the 17-55 f2.8....but then its considerably more money

Take a look at http://www.fredmiranda.com/ for some lens reviews.
Cheers.

2 weeks now!!!
I've been looking at the camera shops thoroughly annoying the sales guys. Poor chaps think I'm up for buying the lens and then I tell them I will think about it without buying anything.
So far I've only been able to try one and it's fantastic. The Canon 17-55mm f2.8 which was recommended earlier is so clear and crisp, I'm beginning to wonder why I didn't change earlier.
I tried it with a 400D unfortunately, but it did give me a good feel of the lens. The AF is remarkably fast and the zoom is very smooth however the small ring is a little annoying but I guess you get used to that.
Light entry was excellent and I did take photos with both the standard 17-55mm lens and the better one. You could see straight away under the same ISO's which allowed more detail to hit the light sensor.
I'll want to try a few more, but since it goes nicely with my telescopic lens, this could be the right lens to buy.
........still.....2 weeks is plenty of time to hunt around!

OK....I'm finding this lens shopping harder than I imagined. There's a lot to choose from so perhaps if I can get some feedback to my options, I'd appreciate the help!
Choice 1
Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM - This is a beauty of a lens, with a fixed f stop meaning good in low light and portrait photos. It's also got a reasonable telescopic lens so it's a good "walkaround" lens to have.
I've also got the benefit that it uses the L glass which is apparently much better than the rest of the series, but my biggest concern is that it's really designed for full frame DSLR's like the 5D and above. I'm guessing with the 40D that I am buying, the cropped frame will update the lens to around 28-106mm which is ok in practice, but I've lost a lot of the wide-angle capability which I like to use.
Choice 2
Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM - Another great lens but not much of an upgrade of all roundness on my 17-55 kit lens. You do of course have a fixed f-stop and since it's so low at 2.8, you get excellent light gathering through the lens which means this is great for night time use.
You also get the image stabilisation which is rather nice too and since the f-stop is so low, it can be used for portrait shots with a good depth of field.
It's also an EF-S lens designed for cropped framed sensors like that of the 40D so the range is exactly what it says on the tin.
Choice 3
Canon EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS USM - My last option. This lens gives a much better all round wide angle to telescopic view, but it's f-stop is much higher meaning it won't work so well in low light. It's even higher than my 300D kit lens so even though I have a 430EX flash, I'm worried it might not be so good in my night shots.
Again it's an EF-S lens so perfect for my 40D so this could be a good option.
With regards to price, I'm ok with all these lenses, but I've no idea what to get. As a summary, I like doing night photography and I take a lot of portrait shots but also a lot of sports and action photography during the day in very bright conditions. (Skiing and mountain biking in summer).
Also keep in mind I have a Canon EF 55-200 f/4.5-5.6 II USM lens in my collection, and I'd also like to eventually buy a fixed wide angle lens but not for another 6 months as the camera and this lens are going to wipe me out for a short while!!!! There's also a tripod to buy, but that's another story....
Cheers for any input!

Don't get confused by the focal lengths even though it is a EF-S specific lens. The 17-55 is still equivalent to a 27-88mm lens and the 17-85 is equivalent to a 27-136mm lens in 35mm 'speak'. Therefore, the EF-S lenses don't do exactly what they say on the tin!!cirks said:

Maybe I'm being too naive since it still brings numerous benefits including the low, fixed f-stop and better lens glass quality.
