You could "make" them work by playing around with rocker leverages to give you the "correct" spring rate and then accept the travel you end up with.
However when designing suspensions you do not build around a spring. The spring is a tuning device and expect to change springs often when setting the car up and for different conditions. I tried 3 different rates before I was happy (ish) but now I want to try some more. Springs are cheap.

Getting the dampers right is more likely to be the issue since they're usually much more difficult and expensive to change. I'd suggest you sort out the basic geometry you want, find out what spring rates you need with that geometry to achieve your required rate at the wheel, and then pick the components to give you the right rates and travels.
