Thinking of Disco 3 purchase. Any tips
Discussion
Hi all,
Thinking of changing my wife's Grand Voyager on a '55 plate for a year old Disco TD.
Now the Voyager always looks like she has offroaded it so as we live in the country now and need a 4x4 I am thinking of chopping it in for a Discovery.
Anyone got any comparisons between a Grand Voyager CRD and the TD? Thinking along the lines of insurance and MPG.
Any major concerns or things to look out for. Also as we have three young children, saftey is obviously important so was a bit worried about stability in high winds. Noticed someone mentioned in another posts of a feeling of the car tipping....
Thanks
Kev

The Disco will use a little bit more fuel depending on how it's driven but it has a vastly superior ride quality and handling. Your kids will be far safer in the Disco - the RHD versions of the Voyager have pretty appalling crash ratings, the sooner you get them out of it the better IMHO.

That is one of the main reasons for changing. There is a new Voyager out in Spring which the dealer cannot tell me how it will fair in the NCAP testing. All they keep saying is it is 'all new'....My wife does have a bit of a heavy foot but as long as we can get mid 20's mpg out of the diesel version then that should be fine.
I'm very pleased with ours and driven normally you will get mid 20's. You and have a look at www.disco3.co.uk.
I bought as new as poss (5 month old car). Wanted to ensure it felt new and that I had the benefit of the 3 yr warranty for longer.
The model line up was until recently:-
Basic 5 seater with coil suspension
Basic 7 seater with air suspension
GS Spec (as above plus a couple of toys)
S spec (as above with a few more toys and different wheels)
SE spec (as above and generally with leather and sat nav and different wheels)
HSE (As above but with LOADS of toys and larger wheels).
In late 06 they got rid of S and replaced with the XS.
You can retro fit lots of stuff if you don’t find the car you want.
I wanted grey or black with leather, privacy glass, phone prep and Xenons.
I bought an 07 XS in Grey with privacy glass and phone. Car didn’t have Xenons (£300 ebay! ), and am retro fitting leather for £900. You can retro privacy glass BUT then it is the stick on stuff as an alternative. You cant retro fit Sat Nav (but my £150 unit is better than LRs effort). I bought some spare wheels with 2 good tyres (from an SE) for £200 from ebay. (also bought tow bar, rear mat, tow electrics, carpet mats, roof bars etc from ebay)
The (ex demo) XS’s are sometimes keenly priced from dealers (not all are so generous) as LR often supply a load to the dealers to help with targets.
I bought an auto but the manuals are cheaper and better on fuel.
The only benefit I can see of the SE and HSE over my car is the standard leather, sat nav and electric seats with arm rests. The majority of the other extras are not items that float my boat.
Cars are generally avail from £20K through to mid £30s. There are loads of early HSEs around.
I would recommend spending late 20s and going for an XS or SE from a dealer.

Gazzab,
Great info thanks.
Went to the local dealer at the weekend to have a look around. Not a great selection of nearly new stuff and as expected the salesman tried to push the finance deals they have going and get me into a brand new one.
Will have a shop around I think but will have to sell the Grand Voyager first as p/x deal is a non starter......
we are looking for a Black or Rimni Red (wife's choice) SE with privacy windows and leather. I will be looking to install a decent DVD/PS system for the children so Satnav will probably come with that.
