Plz - can anyone recommend an independent garage for audi service near Ipswich, Suffolk. My local audi dealer wants £390 for cambelt change on 98 A4 1.9 TDi, sounds a bit steep to me; anyone had an independent cambelt change on similar engine? - plz let me know how much you paid, just as a guide for myself.

Give Scole Engineering a ring on 01379 740940.

Best indi bar none and a reasonable price. I'm sure they will give you a very fair price for the work to be done. thumbup

There are two special locking tools required to do the job, Any garage who has these will have no trouble doing it at all. Without the tools however there could be trouble. Ask them have they done the Audi PD engines before and make sure they use the cambelt kit with the tensioner and roller, not just the belt.

Ipswich Audi want £390 cos there's £60 parts and 3 hours labour at £88 ish + the Vat thatS £380. Its not as steep as it sounds.

I am considering buying an A4 1.9 TDI myself, is it correct that the waterpump should also be changed at same time as cambelt?

Water pump doesnt need to be changed.

Its just a fact that you are at the same point on terms of labour when you fit the belt, so it takes 5 mins to fit while your doing the belt or 3 hour to fit if doing it separately. If there is any sign of leak or it feel rough when you do the belt you have to fit one. I recommend fitting one on the second belt change purely to be on the safe side.

Doesn't sound steep from an Audi dealer.
Pretty reasonable + you will have Audi guarantee on the work wink
