I bought a new PC a little while back (when Oblivion came out, I think), and Far Cry looked stunning on it. I've got the Crysis demo running and it will only run with a much lower video quality than Far Cry (ie the new game looks much worse than the old one on the same rig if I want to maintain the same frame rate).
I have an AMD 3700+ dual core processor, a decent motherboard (can't remember what but it's not a cheap n cheerful one), Nvidia 7800GT video card (the 256mb version), and a whopping 256MB of RAM. Nothing is overclocked (I wouldn't know how) and I have just updated the drivers for the video card to get the demo running.

I can't spend a fortune on upgrading everything, so I was thinking of either whacking a load more RAM in it, or buying another 7800GT and linking them together (I think it's called SLI?). Wheres the best place to spend my money to get a worthwhile improvement?

I know I'm not going to be able to run it at full blast, I would like to get above 800x600 on low quality though!

256 of ram is not very much. I would get this upto at least 1 gig.

Go for 4GB RAM and then get 2 of any of the following cards to use if your PC can support SLI:

How can you have 256 ram with a 256 graphics card? I take it both weren't bought at the same time!? You say you got it when oblivion came out? I bought my PC about 2 years before Oblivion and it had 512 ram ( now 1280)
Stick as much ram as you can fit in there! Its not really expensive, and cheaper if you buy a single big stick then two smaller..

Also, is crysis not out yet? I remember they were testing it when I worked at EA back in June last year...

256 of ram can't be right surely? 1 gig is entry level now really!

Also, before you go spending cash, make sure your motherboard allows SLI, that your power
supply is up to the job, that the ram you wish to purchase fits in your board..

You get the picture i'm sure wink

And that the processor is powerful enough not to act as a bottleneck in the system as the CPU still does the bulk of the geometry calcs.

Don't just stick 4GB in whatever you do - it's unlikely your OS can use more than 3GB if it's Windows.

A 2GB upgrade should see decent performance without breaking the bank.

Any windows 64 bit OS will see it though, although i think it depends if your mobo has the option
of memory mapping as to whether it shows up.Vista 64 on my machine shows 4 gig, Vista 32 shows 2 gig
and Xp 32 showed 3.2 gig iirc.
Tbh though, anything i run runs just as well with 2 gig.

In his original post he mentions 256MB of RAM so I made a leap and assumed he wasn't running a 64bit OS, I guess I could be wrong...

Was one of those internet forum moments, sorry. biggrin
I just read the.. "it's unlikely your OS can use more than 3GB if it's Windows"
bit and thought it was worth mentioning that the 64 bit versions do.Obviously
you knew that anyway!

I've got Windows XP, not sure if that is 64 bit or not?

The RAM is a bit archaic, no question! I had plans to upgrade but ran out of money at the time, and have had no performance problems up until now so never bothered....

Even XP itself will benefit and be zippier with 512 to a gig plus of ram.Well worth
going the ram route first.

Crysis however is a bitch of a game to run at high details and a decent res.
Even with my core 2 duo @ 3 gig, 4 gig of ram and an Nvidia GTX card, i still ended up running on high settings instead of very high and every now and again would drop the shader level to medium for the hectic bits.I also ended up running at a 1280 res instead of my monitors native 1680x1050 for many sections.
Almost all other games (Call Of Duty 4 for example), i can just max out totaly and they run sweet, crysis is something else though.

I fear you will need to spend a few quid if you are after eye candy Sir frown

Be aware that with many motherboard chipsets, when you take the jump to 4GB, it actually accesses it more slowly than it would 2GB. Crysis only appears to use a max 1GB anyway.

Have a look here http://www.tweakguides.com/Crysis_1.html

The main slowdown for me is the annoying pause to load in textures and models now and then. One of the tweaks loads in all the textures at the start of each level.

i dont think there is a simple upgrade here.

I have a amd3000 cpu. 8800gts graphics card and 2 gig or ram.
Cryis runs like a dog overall. 10-15 fps. Much of the time even below 10fps. I dont find it that enjoyable playing such a jerky game

Personally I think they have overengineered the game.

Call of Duty 4 looks fantastic and plays completely smooth at max seting on my computer.

unless you play at fairly low res like 1024 or 1280 then there isnt anything on the market right now that can run Crysis maxxed out...well have to wait for the next gen of graphics card - its too ahead of its time. Apparently theres another 25% of enhancements it can do even over the "very high" settings

I have a core2 duo @ 2.93Ghz and 8800 Ultras in SLI, overclocked to 650 and cant run at 1900 res on my 24" Dell - I have to run at 1600 odd widescreen with most settings on high, a couple on very high ...it looks great, but its still not that smooth

even if you put a pair of 7800GTs in there you wont really be able to play it as intended - maybe get a single 8800 and see how that goes - should be ok if you have a 19" monitor or such like and can run at medium to high settings (which look really good)
