I'm thinking of buying, but have read some pretty awful reports.

Are they as unreliable as these reports make out?
What are dealers/service costs like?

The model in question is a 2005 2.0D SE Sport.

Many thanks,
Dr C

I've got a V50 2.0D SE as a Company car - Just done 30k miles in the first year and has been faultless, not so much as a blown bulb!
Car looks as new when cleaned up and the build quality is superb.
The 2.0D is very good and has tons of grunt, keeps up with most things on the road if you want it to.
Servicing costs are average, but have heard that parts can be very dear - can't comment on that yet!
Oh, and those were 30k HARD miles - I tend to drive 'briskly' and not a lot of motorway miles in there...

Hi,
I have a 2006 2.0D SE Sport. I've found the car to be great to date (touch wood)it has seen 13,000 miles in the past 5 months and going great. As above when cleaned up the car looks like new. I came from a VW golf TDI and only missing a little performance of that in the real world.

The dealers is 1 of the reasons I bought the car. Found BMW, Audi, Lexus and even VW to a degree unwilling to help on simple questions. Volvo invited me in and treated me like a human.

As for servicing costs, just about to have a 25,000 miles on Friday cost is going to be £240, so reasonable and similar to the VW.

Odd things to get used to is the key on the opposite side of the steering wheel.

Overall very impressed and have not looked back since getting it.

Thanks for the replies.
I'm looking at a 05 Sport SE, 46k miles for 13k on Saturday.

Anything in particular to look out for?
what kind of MPG do you get?

Hi,

The question of MPG is a hot issue on the Volvo forum http://www.volvoforums.org.uk/. I tend to get around 46-48 mpg on a run and a little worse if I'm just doing short journey's.

As for what to look for, make sure it's have the first service. The rest make sure you are happy with.

Regards

Marcus

2.0D S but specced up with various useful things rather than the std stuff you get with the SE, includes winter pack, comms pack and various other bits and bobs that work put in, mainly communications stuff.

50k and two blown dipped bulbs and that is it.

Fuel consumption better than the similarly engined Mundanos but nothing to write home about.

Will confirm high 40's on a run, 47-48 ish but everyday high 30's 38-39, that includes hard use round the lanes.

This is a car which is used hard, and regularly and repeatedly Vmax'd (or as near as makes no difference) on derestricted autobahns naturally. smile

I've put just over 50K miles on my V50 2.0D SE over the last 3 years. Never missed a beat, not even blown a bulb yet. So totally faultless on reliabilty. Fuel consumption. Well the computer shows an average 37 mpg! No idea if it's real or not, but I hope not! Satnav system is excellent, so well worth trying to find a used car with it fitted. Overall it's a nice car to spend time in.

Swapped my Vauxhall Vectra (07 plate - dont ask, more problems than i care to remember) and havnt looked back, Mines actually an s40 (i.e. a saloon v50) on an '04, i bought it with 49,000 on the clock and just got it back from its 72,000 service (owned it 6 months), i drive very energetically and sum total of faults is as follows:
1: blown nearside headlight bulb
2: same bulb blown??? - this was 5 months ago, no problems since!
3: turbo pipe came off underneath, possibly caught as the drip tray was damaged too
4: blocked fuel filter
5: bent steering arm - big van reversed into the wheel so doesnt really count!

starts first time every time and bloody nice to drive.

Services:
Watch out for the cambelt ones (e.g. 72,000) the rest are pretty normal, about £300 from main dealer!

72,000 - see my other post, main dealer quoted £1000+, local garage charged me £550!

my advice - Go for it, unless you see a nice v70 around the same price!
