Over the last few days I have had a knocking noise coming from just behind my seat, beneat the car.
The knock happens on acceleration/braking only.

I have looked through a lot of the threads about diffs, but am still unsure.
There is no whining noise. just the knock.

Am in the surrey area, any recommendations on how I can get this checked out.
Am hoping its just the bushes that are worn. Hopefully.

Oh yes, its a pre-serp 93 car.

Thanks

I used to get a knocking coming on/off load and also when going over speed bumps etc. For me it was the diff bushes and I had them replaced with polys.
If it's the 2 lower bushes it's a fairly cheap job. If the upper bush has also gone it'll cost a fair bit more (cost for mine is on my cars profile blog) and my upper had to be cut out.

Sounds like bushes to me

I made some enquires at Fernhurst when I thought my diff was leaking and they were very helpful. They should be able to get it on the lift and have a look and advise you further. Plus its a nice drive to get there

Also TVRfix in Ewell, but not used them yet

if you can get the rear up on stands, then get under there and give the diff a good tug. The mounting points are fairly obvious

yeah I use tvrfix ALOT, but they are normally busy this time of year.
The knock is getting louder.

Get under the car and check first the prop & driveshaft flange bolts. You can wiggle all the U'Js and use a pry bar to check the bushes. Dont overlook the ARB - this can also clonk.

Ok! what is an ARB?
We just changed the suspension from GAZ Golds to Nitrons. (The GAZ are far better)
All UJ's were changed then.

ARB=Anti Roll Bar

Plenty of owners will bite your hand off to trade their Gaz Golds for your Nitrons. I'd check the spring rates & set up, if they weren't new its possible they need servicing.

Sure they did propshaft U'Js & driveshaft CV Joints when replacing your shocks?

Basically once you get under the back of the car its just worth checking everything you can (I seem to remember one perplexed owner who even had a loose fuel filter clonking).

Oh yes am sure they were changed.
i just spoke to them, I need to get the rebound click set-up to suit my style.
My GAZ were amazing. In the 7 years of owning my car, it handled, stopped & cornered like no other.
I even had a few garages not believing they were GAZ shocks & springs.
The only thing was they started to squeak like mad after 2 years.

My Diff bushes have come out today and they were FUBAR.

The symptons were exacly like yours, and I first checked CVs, Lobros and UJs before dropping the diff.

However when I checked with the car on axle stands it wasn't that easy to spot diff movement. Some reasonable leverage from a crowbar was required to show how soft the bushes had become.
