X Box live - Connection problems

I have just bought an Xbox 360 with wireless connection etc. Really great unit but having problems playing on line.

I am definatley connected to the modem and have played seveal games on COD3 & COD4 but more often than not I get the message "could not connect to host" or "could not connect to all players".

Any tips on how to sort this would be greatly appreciated.

P.S. my Broad band is supposed to be 8mb but I suspect that it is probably a lot less.

Sounds familar with mine one day i can connect another it just does not want to know even though nothing has changed from the previous day.
I've tried unplugging the wireless adapter turning the system off and on still all i get is network adapter disconnected [which its not]then a couple of hours later the adapter comes to life and i'm away unlike today the indiacater stayed red this time and no network detected.
Sorry about hijacking your post Airtrixx but i also could do with some answers please

I might be wrong but i thought if your connection isn't strong enough you will be dropped from whatever server you happen to be on at the time. Hence your 'could not establish connection' type errors.

Log on to your router at a couple of different times a day to see what sort of connection speeds you're getting. You'll find that by resetting your router at 4 or 5 in the morning should enable you to gain the best connection possible. Certainly worked in my case. I'm with Sky and i'm meant to be getting 8mb but the best i've seen in 2.5mb - 3mb, and the worst was less than 1mb. Pretty poor really!

I'm also with Sky Andeh and connection speed does seem to vary quite a lot to the extent that i lose it on the pc at times or it just becomes very slow usually when the weathers poor[i expect the main servers been cramed with users]something i never had with virgin media which is a pity as i can't get it where i live due to the est being fairly new,i suppose i'll just have to put up with sky for now.

Yep, i think the heavy rain on Wednesday evening caused my connection to drop several times. Fortunately a couple of hard reboots of the router got it working again. However, that's nothing compared to the issues i had when i first took broadband from Sky. That's another story though!

I'm sure other ISP's will be better but for £5 a month, Sky is pretty hard to beat. Especially as it seems most of us in the UK aren't getting anywhere near the connection speeds we should be getting. Compared to the speeds available in Paris where domestic users can get upwards of 20mb. That's a proper 20mb too. Not a "Up to..." service we get here.

EA have acknowledged a problem with their cod4 ladder/matchmaking service, i have also had a few problems connecting to games.

Im on sky, and when it works it great, although i often have to hard-reboot the crappy router i had forced on me and some days are just awful with regular disconnections and cryptic messages from my router which seem to imply their service is buggered. How is the weather effecting connection quality? I got fobbed off with this excuse a few times when i called them to have a moan; it doesn't seem relevant as the connection is wired (adsl) and over the very same phoneline i had no such problems with my previous provider BT.

Quick update. I think that my problem is solved now.

The NAT was set to strict. I went on the BT Hub manager and through application sharing set up a "DMZ" for the Xbox.

It works perfectly now, I can get in to all the games while chatting to my mate online at the same time

I tried other settings first but this was the only one that would give me an "open" NAT.

I was just about to reply with the check the status of your connection on the xbox, it took me a little bit of fiddling to get my nat OPEN.

I note that Bungie recommend the DMZ approach rather than the forwarding approach that's on the MS help pages.

Was just going to say that if you check out the Bungie pages they've got tutorials on how to put your 360 in to a DMZ, seems to work well.

sounds like you are a bit too far from the home hub try changing orientation to see if you get a better signal to the xbox

Its on your 360 in system or settings mate

I'm pretty sure that just shows you what the xbox has tested the settings to be. It has to be changed at the router AFAIK.

You should be able to get away with just enabling upnp on the BT homehub and that should report open NAT for the xbox

Yeah i use the wireless adapter too and it's temperamental, but i just turn my router on and off and it usually helps if my laptop is on too (?!)

But what annoys me is that I can never find anyone on Live to play against! I get headaches playing gun games and ones where you run about, for example, Harry Potter so I have cartoon type games, like lego starwars, viva pinata and sport ones, rockstar ping pong and nhl 2k7. I can hardly ever find anyone playing these and I know they're not new releases but there must be SOMEONE playing them too somewhere on the globe, even a wee Japanese kid or something! Is it something to do with my settings? MSN works fine so I kinda doubt it.

Same here, been penalised about 9 ranks already because of sky's instability. COD4 doesn't have such a penalty system, although after seeing "host ended match" for the 80th time you wish it did.

OT: tnx for the halo3 invite last night, was chilling with the mrs who is very nearly giving birth (been up all night)..
