Got a Linksys wireless router (WAG54GS) which cant be returned as it is a gift from work.

Got it home and tried to install it with my broadband supplied by Virgin Media.

Virgin media have supplied me with a cable modem which has a ethernet connection on the back which i connected directly to the back of my PC. However, if i try to connect the new Linksys device between the cable modem and the PC i cant as the 'internet in' socket on the linksys device is smaller than a ethernet connection ! It looks almost like a phone socket.

Is there any way i can use this with a VirginMedia (ex NTL) cable modem?

Please help, i promised my kids wireless computing and dont want to look like a old fuddy.

Thanks in advance.

Sounds like it would be possible if you set up your PC with internet connection sharing, and have two network cards, one for the cable modem and one for the router. I think.
Far easier to get a wireless enabled cable modem for the Virgin connection and sell on the old one and the wireless router.

If I've read you right, that is.

I suspect you've got the sockets muddled on the new router.

'Internet in' would be the ADSL phone line, which would probably have an RJ11 socket. This looks somewhat similar to an RJ45 Ethernet socket at first glance but they're completely different beasts.

You have a Cable system. The Router is designed to work on a BT line. The normal way to set it up would be to connect the Router to the BT phone line via an ADSL filter. Then Connect the PC using an Ethernet or wireless Network Card and using the Router's IP address enter the details of the Account so that the Router "logs on" to your ISP automatically. The Cable Modem you have sounds like it Needs you to Connect it in the same manner as a standard Modem. You can get Cable Router's but they use a different standard of communications to ADSL.

Try This instead
