Hi, Does anyone know where I can find, or what kind of car, the power window switches are from? I seem to have taken mine apart and cleaned them once too often. Also I am still looking to find some window motors... I just know mine are going to quit some time soon!!! Thanks Kenny

Pull the window motors from your XJS. See my post

The passenger side window switch wouldn’t work when I first bought my ’91 SE. However, I was able to repair the switch. Here’s how I did it. I removed it and bathed it in WD40 (for you folks in the UK, WD40 is an aerosol penetrating oil/solvent) then I blew it out with a high pressure air hose. I did this 3 or 4 times, and eventually it started to function again. I reinstalled it, and haven’t experienced any problems since. That was 9 months ago.

Oops, sorry. The motors are from the XJS. I don't know what the switches are from. Taking one apart, it looks to be made the same as those little lizard clicker toys we had as a kid. You know, the kind, they would break after about a half a day of clicking. The switches are designed the same way.

I've given all my window switches the WD40 treatment over the last 2 months, I think it’s just buying a little time. This weekend I plan to have a good look around some local salvage yards for the switches. I'm 100% sure I've seen them on something before (maybe even a Rover SD1?)

Also I think the door seals from a Rover 800 series (with the cloth spine instead of the black plastic ones on my 89 SE) might be persuaded to fit so I will post back if anyone is interested? I think this will be a nice improvement and they come in both gray and sand.

The correct repair for window switches is to take them apart and very lightly sand the burned contact with some emery cloth to remove the burnt spot which is making the poor contact. Just remember when you take them apart to open the switch very carefully so the springs don't go flying. To reassemble them, a dab of dielectric grease will hold things in place. New switchs are not that expensive and may be obtained through S&J Sportscars.

HI Guys,
Thanks for all the input! Unfortunately I don't have my XJS any longer, (I traded it on my Esprit!), so I won't be able to look at the motors or the switches to compare.
I've taken my switches apart and cleaned them many times. I think too often. One of them finally "Ate the Radish" so to speak, when a small piece of brass broke off. My motors are in about the same condition also, so I am looking for them too. I have found new motors from R.D. Enterprises but they're a little expensive! To the tune of $350 USD apiece!!! I know that they must be from something else and alot cheaper. I am looking into the ones from a '58-'78 Corvette but I have my doubts. One of mine was "Cobbed" together from a Bosch motor and the other one is a Delco and original, but the part number is illegible due to all the grease in the works.
As for the switches I will check into the ones from S&J Sportscars. Thanks again for all the advice and help! Kenny

This one should be the correct piece:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2423534150&category=33706

or you can get www.windowmotor.com/products.html
to sell you one for a lot more, exchange.

Thanks Dr. Hess,
It does look like what I'm looking for. I just put a bid on it, but we'll see what happens. I think I will be out-bid or no where near the Buy it now listing. At least I have some pics and some more info! Thanks again!

You should win the auction. I think it has been relisted a couple times already. One thing to remember: The Esprit right side is the Jag left front, from my research, and vice versa. The motors themselves (not the gearbox) are swapable left/right but it is a minor PITA (brushes and springs). Easier to just get the correct side if available.

Thanks for that tip on the Mini switches. Unfortunately I don't think they are common here in the US. JAE does carry new switches for $25, though. I bought a couple.

Yes, my weekend investigations told me they were from Montego and Maistro (so I guess must also be Metro).

The problem I had was that none of the breakers had any! I think they have all rusted away now…. But I will look again this weekend. I might also find out what Rover charge for them.

I have a Montego (hang my head in shame), I use it every day to and from the railway station, hasn't missed a beat since new. I'll check the manual when I get home as mine has manual air conditioning

If they are the correct switches they are £18.87 + Vat from any Rover Dealer.

Edited to add price.
