I 'm trying to build a portfolio of shots for a website, and I have a free day tomorrow to do with what I please. I have quite a few people shots, and I think the most obvious gap in my rather small portfolio is landscapes. I live in cheltenham so have the Cotswolds, Forest of Dean, and Wales not too far away, all potential places for landscape shots.

I'm thinking of heading to Wales, but have no idea where! I think I need some help, either a suggested place to visit or a theme/subject to shoot.

Any ideas? I'll consider anything!

If you are going to Wales, Castles as a subject with mountainous scenery in the background. Went to Chepstow Castle a while ago. Beautiful place. Depends where in Wales you had in mind though. North or South?

Chepstow - South (ish)- Castle/river scenery
Swallow Falls Betws-y-coed - mid - Water falls/scenery
Llandudno coast line (Great Orms Head) - North - Coastline/heritage coast

I don't see a gap in your portfolio as something to be concerned about. The phrase "Jack of all trades..." rings true here - be good at what you are good at, don't try to fill gaps that don't need filling.

If you are looking to build a portfolio, I'd say spend the day constructively getting quality images that are a dead cert - not hunting a landscape that might never come out.

If you're looking to enjoy yourself with a nice portfolio as a bonus result, that's a different story.

I used to live in the forest of dean and the wife grew up there.

The follwoing are good places:-

Mallards Pike
Symonds yat
Soudley ponds
Beechenhurst (Just outside if cinderford)
Cannop ponds
Lydney docks (Good shots of the severn and old severn bridge)

If you drive around off the main roads just park up and you will not be far from somewhere good. Forestry gates are normally good as there will be a good path to walk down.

Wales this time of year tends to be very bleak. But i do like north wales combines to hobbies photography and driving montain passes. If you have a sat nav goto north wales and program it to take you over Llanberis, horseshoe, aberglaslyn, bwlch y gorddinan Passes and Denby moor, Swallow falls. You cant go wrong me and the wife did all of them in one day. We started in Pwllheli and did a big loop.

It is very good driving roads and fantasic scenery.

Thanks for the input guys, all good. I'm gonna start with the local area this morning, combining a nice drive through the cotswolds with the odd stop off and walk for taking pics.

Would love to go to mid wales but it's 3 hrs there and 3 hrs back!
