Fuel tank to pump pipe renewal

I have just noticed on the V8s that the pipe from the base of the fuel tank to the fuel pump is looking a little bit perished and would probably benifit from renewal.
Do I need to drain the tank, and if so what is the best way bearing in mind that the car is not road worthy at the mo.
Anybody know what ID size the pipe from tank to pump is, and if its anything special,as on my motor is leaves the tank as one size and it reduces to a smaller to fit the spigot on the pump, anybody know what ID the pipe is which terminates onto the pump.

Hi Pete.
On mine the pipe has an ID of 1/2inch.
You will need to drain the tank as when you remove the pipe the contents of the tank will fall out!
I have not replaced the pipe but I have been messing around in that area. When I drained my tank I undid the circular whatsit at the bottom of the tank where the pipe starts. Just tap the lugs and it will undo. Inside you will gain (limited) access to the strainer. Mine was knackered and I replaced it with a strainer from a paint gun which,so far, has done the job perfectly. I am also going to fit an inline "bullet" filter but have not got around to it yet.I got mine from Anthony at www.fastroadcars.co.uk 01495 244362 for just under £60 inc a spare paper filter and postage.

does your 1/2" id pipe reduce before it enters the pump like mine. How did the bung re seal after you had removed it??

I think it says in Steve Heaths Bible that the fuel pipe is Hydraulic grade pipe (reinforced) and that standard petrol pipe isn't up to it. If you want further info I'll have a look properly at what it says.

The pipe I have does not reduce in size.
The bung consists of a large O with 3 lugs, a 3" disc and a rubber seal.
Turning the lugs pushes the disc up to the seal. It doesn't turn far.
