MAZDA RX7 NOISE (TRACKDAY LIMITS)
Discussion
Hi
I need some help and advice please!
Has anyone had any experience of trackday noise tests. My car has a slightly noisier than standard exhaust an I am a bit worried about getting turned away from a track day as a result.
Maybe someone on here not too far from North Kent actually has a noise meter.
The target is under 105dB - what does that sound like??
I would describe my exhaust as fruity rather than loud!

It'll be 105db at 3/4 revs, and 105db is pretty loud - but I see you have an RX7 and they are usualy on the stratospheric side of loud if they have an after market back box, etc.
has it still got a proper rear silencer and centre box or even CAT? If so they you may be ok. To be sure you need to track down/buy a sound meter.

I've done a couple of trackdays in my FD and had problems everytime with various attempts at getting the noise down. The pipe is 80mm straight through with a silenced feed mid-pipe and one of those bungs that bolt into the tailpipe. If you want to be sure of getting on the track you can either fit a standard backbox or fit one that's not straight through, (so it forces the exhaust and noise through a silencer.) I've made a simple noise shield type thing, it's a bit of chicken wire (i know how nasty that sounds) with some exhaust baffle i got off ebay sandwiched in the middle and with a massive pipe clip it's held onto the exhaust to muffle the noise, but dont cover the exhaust or the gases wont get out! If you have problems on track and they black flag you, just keep the revs down a bit, i was at donington and as soon as i hit 7rpm i would be flagged. There's not much you can do about the screaming rotary engine!!!

Thanks chaps.
The exhaust is a Racing Beat (American) one with a back box which has two exit tailpipes in the style of the original. The catalayst remains in place.
Like you say I think I need to test it now rather than try and cobble something up on the day!
The RB backbox is pretty good noise vs flow wise but is a bit lopuder than standard. The exhaust is a Racing Beat (American) one with a back box which has two exit tailpipes in the style of the original. The catalayst remains in place.

Having the cat in place will seriously cut volume though so you should be okay.
To put it in context mine was ~93db with a silenced cat replacement and, random backbox and mild porting on the engine.
Since then I've changed the abckbox to RB and the porting is a tad larger. It's significantly louder but unlikely to be over 100db.
105db is very very loud indeed.

Just been to Brands Hatch. a trackday was in progress but everyone was having lunch. A horrible wet and windy day. A guy called Bob tested my car at 97 or 97dB so well inside acceptable levels thankfully. Thanks for the advice.
Didn't see this post... very useful to know it passed and passed easily! How was the trackday?
Hi Ian
I wasn't actually signed up for the Brands thing yesterday (Sunday). Mine is on 15th December at Snetterton.
First one for me! Although I've done other loosely related things.
Have you had your RX on a track? Mine is so good on the road that I really need to try the track. It will probably feel fairly pedestrian...

Done a few track and airfield days. Like most of the modded cars round these parts they're too good for the road and you drive them at a fraction of their potential. Track days are the only way to really rag them and stay alive and out of prison!I wasn't actually signed up for the Brands thing yesterday (Sunday). Mine is on 15th December at Snetterton.

Brands is great fun and Snetts really suits the FD - if you've got a bit more than standard power it _really_ suits it!
Silverstone works it well too but I managed to scare myself last time I was there - a few more power mods meant my breaking spots were no longer relevant and I ended up breaking very deep into a few corners before winding it in a bit!
Shame the Snetts day is on the 15th though or I'd be tempted to come along

i have the same Racing Beat back box as you. When i got the car it had a small centre box and i thought it too loud; quite 'boomy' and annoying on long journeys. Or short ones. So i put a FEED Sonic mid-pipe on. I now noise test at 96db static.
Its not a true test though; the Racing Beat is like a lot of the exhausts i used to have on my dirtbikes; quiet on half throttle, bringing the revs up for a static 'set revs' test but a bit of a howler with your foot hard down. Subsequently my driveby noise is higher. Watch yourself at Bedford; i failed the drive-by on the first corner of the first lap! I spent the rest of the day half-throttling until i knew where the mics were; then i could open it up everywhere but past them. You only get one chance to quieten down or you get sent home.
I was fine at Snetterton; its 103 there i think. Foot down all day! Same with Rockingham, which is the better track (if you do the 'international long' one.
This is mine, built for the track but top fun on the road as well

Very nice black Mazda. Looks like that was at Goodwood. Breakfast club or trackday? I'm looking forward to Snetterton. Booked a B&B as it is a bit of a trek. My mechanic (garage nearest work!) is giving the brakes a once over/clean up. Bought some new rear disks from Japan via Newera. Cheaper than I could find at home. Mine's an RS and has annoyingly subtle variations from the usual model here and there including those disks. Let's hope I fly the rotary flag in a respectable way on Saturday. Oh and no snow would be nice...
