Is there any way of getting more boost from a 1.8t Audi A4 without getting the car chipped? The A4 doesn't use a MAP sensor to measure boost, it works out boost via the air mass meter so as far as I know I can't play with the air mass signal to gain boost.... Also if I was to add a manual boost controller the the ecu would see an overboost and go into limp. Any ideas??

These engines have a solenoid valve known as the "N75 valve" This is partly responsible for managing boost. It is possible to swap these valves with valves from different variants of the 1.8T engine, and you can gain a couple of PSI of boost that way.

And yes, it is also possible to fit a boost controller, but they are not the best option for these engines. All it does it crank the boost up, then leaves the ECU to its best guestimates for fuelling and ignition timing, so it just wont give as good power (and potentially reliability) as a proper remap would.

I really wouldn't hesitate too much to get a remap (chip) for one of these engines. Its a bomb proof engine and they can take the added strain with ease. Plus the remaps are near as dammit undetectable by pretty much anyone.
Its easily the best few hundred quid you could spend on the car. The difference is night & day..

I can certainly recommend www.jabbasport.com if they are not too far from you.. They mapped my previous car. For the money you can have a proper custom remap session done on the rolling road, and get before/after rolling road print outs so you can see whats been gained with no BS. And all for little to no more money than a generic off the shelf 'chip' would cost.
Its having your cake and eating it.

I know the N75 valve can spool the turbo up quicker, but I'm not so sure it can increase boost. If I was to fit a manual boost controller and up the boost by any amount worth having then the ECU will deffo go into limp. The car is a 1.8t quattro I don't want to get it remapped, I just want to experiment with it.

The boost controller I saw was not one of those mechanical type bleed valves, as that would likely cause limp/safe mode, as you said. I think the one I saw was this, or one very much like it. Its electronic.

I believe this interfaces with the N75 valve somehow.

Bar this, or a remap there isn't much you can do to the engine for a modest cost that will make a real difference.
Why do you not want a remap? I cant recommend them enough for an engine like this. It really is verging on rude not to! I know when I had mine done, my only regret was not having it done sooner. It was bloody great hehe

P,

[edit] My old dyno plot. Showing before/after numbers. Originally a 150bhp 1.8T engine, but dyno'd at 174bhp. Finished with a healthy 228bhp and a lot more torque.
