Slight knocking from the back end
Discussion
Hi all,
I have noticed recently that there is a very slight knocking coming from somewhere behind me when accelerating or deccelerating much like when diff bushes are going or gone. I had my diff bushes replaced this year though so I can't imagine it would be them and the knocking is much more subtle and quiet and can only really be noticed at low speed when jabbing the throttle. I'm not very well clued up on the drive train beyond the gearbox so I can only assume that it could be a CV joint or something. Would this be a fair assumption? How would I check?

A spanner check of the diff flange connections is always worthwhile as a matter of course. You can check the ARB without dropping the exhaust, but both need to be popped off to get at the propshaft.
A lot of clunks can be cured with propshaft UJ's for less than a fiver, but sadly neglected for some reason. Dropping the prop also gives you a good chance to look at the handbrake linkage, top of chassis....

Sounds like a good plan... less than a 5er you say? Where would be the best place to get hold of the UJs? And is the process roughly described in the bible? If so i'll jack it up when I take it home for xmas and have a good look around and probably replace the joints. I have a pretty big list of things to do including fitting the new ECU and alarm so hopefully it will be a productive week or so!
Actually, one thing on the list is that the door opening ball thing doesn't self return when turned to the left (passenger door) side so I am assuming that the return spring has broken or come loose... How on earth do I get to it and where might I find a replacement spring if the old one is screwed? I searched around on pistonheads and have found no mention of anything to do with the ball so far! Anyone have any clues??

I get my stuff from Spire bearings, but I dont think you want to be going to Chesterfield
I would expect you should have a local bearing specialist, but these facilities do seem to be quite variable depending where you are in the country??? You have to take the old ones in & they know how to measure them (seeing them pull out a vernier gauge is always a good sign
). Early cars have 2 UJ's and the later T5 just the one on the prop shaft BTW.
I'd suggest you start another topic on the door release.

I had a similar problem with clunking noises coming from the back of the car. Had it checked at the last service and found the CV joints were worn. Becuase the cv joints were obviously worn, the exhaust wasn't removed to check the prop shaft UJs. I've since had the the CV joints replaced which has cured the problemm to an extent, but I still get the odd noise under acceleration at slow speeds. It sounds quite likely that the propshaft could causing this. I'm planning to do some work on the outriggers shortly so the car will be up on axle stands. Can anybody give me some advice on how to check if the UJs are worn.

My plan was to check all the mountings and bushes including the ARBs and drop links. If I can't find anything I'll then drop the exhaust and check the propshaft. BTW how much hassle is it to remove the exhaust with the car on axle stands?
5 minute job!!!!Very easy to do....and to eliminate the drop links and anti roll bar just remove it and take the car for a spin round the block?
Its much easier to make some ramps & drive it up to do the work. Stands just get in the way
Its also easier to shake the suspension etc up & down if the wheels are still bearing weight & stable.
A few good lengths of 8x2 and a couple of hours with a saw (cut a nice slope) will pay you back very fast IMHO. You need them to get most jacks under anyway.
