Can someone remind me please -

a)are Estorils normally 15 inch front and 16 rear?

b)what width are estorils? and therefore what is the widest tyre they'll take? 245s?

c)are 16 inch Spiders capable of taking wider rubber?

Thanks guys

a) Yes
b) 7.5", so yes 245 on the rear.

Spiders require a hub replacement though. Five stud versus four stud original equipment

There where some 4 stud Spiders made according to Heath Briggs but they are very rare.

If your considering spiders, I would seriously take a look at the wheels from Silverstone Performance thats where my money is going when the existing tyres have worn down.

they're weak? I thought the 18's were weak but I figured 16's would be "stronger"?

Part of my thinking was to get wider rubber on the road. I've been used to nice wide 255s getting 400 bhp down on my previous M5 and I reckon I'm gonna feel like I'm in a Laurel & Hardy film when I get a RV8 TVR again!

Hub conversion was the way I was thinking.

Praps I should just stick to 4 stud but a good set of 17's......?

Most seem generally satisfied with common 245x45/16s on the rear, common upgrade is a pair of 16" rears on the front with 225x45/16s or alternatively R888's.

The weight of the car and tyre compounds will make a comparison of tyre size & tread contact very different to your old metal monsterwink

Spending your money on bushes/dampers/springs allied to serviceable BJ's/TRE's/steeringUJ's and obligatory geometry setup will be much more worthwhile.

Quite a few of us have spiders simply because the factory offered a great deal! 4 new 16" wheels & tyres, new hubs & bearings, wheel studs, centre badges, valve caps, braided hoses, new rear disks & pads, AP 4 pot front calipers, disks, mounts and even rack stops all for the unbelievable price of.... £1400 (that included the VAT, but not fitting!!!). In comparison to that I do find it hard to justify doing something similar - the costs now just seem to make other options look more attractive IMHO.

There are monster brake conversions on 4 stud hubs (Pasco for one) and the SP wheels look pretty good (spiders are not lightweight BTW).

You may have notice that I have nudgeded your 'getting power down' question towards the more sensible staying on the black stuff & stopping issues. Pasco again may be a good person to talk to at the moment, he has 350bhp and has just had some suspension upgrades to match the engine.

thanks for the helpful 'nudge' Dave. smile

I think the price TVR were doing the conversion for was nuts!

Anyway that aside, the potential of 16s jumped out at me as I'm currently in a position to buy a brand new set of spiders with brand new Toyo tyres for £680
which I thought was a pretty fine deal. A hub conversion at £400 inc vat? just a tempting upgrade.

I fully intend to buy new shocks as the main 'performance upgrade' when I get chance.

It does depend on what is included. Brakes, braided hoses, calliper converter brackets, tyres, wheels, etc.
