Hi,

Help needed please! I need to replace the engine on my ZX9R engined (excuse me - Westy). It's a relatively old engine where the gearbox has gone bang, so I'm not overly keen on spending the best part of a grand rebuilding the gearbox, and fancy a hike in power whilst I'm considering the options. The favourite choice was a 2007 ZX10R engine (50 extra bhp), but the costs are escalating:
New manifold,
Changing the engine mountings,
Maybe increasing the height of the transmission tunnel due to the increased height of the crankshaft (potentially the biggest job)?
Shortened sump - I imagine I'm going to have to get this made?
Usual stuff - fuel line, wiring etc.

I can get the engine for £1500, but I'm struggling to get the additional bits to add up to less than an additional £1500. Okay - it's an extra 50bhp on the old ZX9R but at £3K it's beginning to look pricey.

Has anyone done a ZX10R engine, and perhaps have a list of things that I need to factor into the build cost?? Are there things here I haven't factored in? Do I need to do the transmission tunnel? Anyone know where I can get a shortened sump without having to get one made from scratch?

Help much appreciated!

First thing to determine is whether it needs dry sumping . .. some do, some don't. And if it's one that does, you need to do it or you'll just blow engine after engine.
Dry sumps are not cheap but you may be able use a rotating pickup sump (a weak compromise to a dry sump but miles cheaper).

Other than that, there's the following to consider:
1. Shifter - does it need modding (i.e. location and shift direction)?
2. Clutch - the same actuation?
3. ECU - assume you can't plug a ZX10 into a ZX9 loom, so you'll need a loom as well?
4. Output flange - you've said it's in a different place, but can you use your ZX9 flange and will your prop stretch/compress far enough?

You've already covered the exhaust and layout differences.

Erm what about a completely different brand on engine

I would be tempted to look at bike engines that are already used in westys as in the fireblade and busa as you might find it alot easier to get a decent and reliable installation

Over on the jock 7 forums there is a guy with a Kawasaki engine in a caterham but exactly what brand it is i have no idea

Have a word with Ian Grey, at Stuart Taylor motorsport.

I know he raced ZX12 sevens, and may know about the ZX10.
