Well I've searched and can't find my VAT return form anywhere. They'll be screaming for their cash in three days time and although I've been to the HMRC website to find one to download, and e-mailed them twice over 10 days asking for one, I'm no further forward.

Can I download a 'blank' VAT return from them, and if so, where exactly? I have no doubt that they will try to fine me £100 if it's late, but I can't think what else to do. Thanks folks!

Do you photocopy your returns before sending them off?

If you do, you could photocopy the copy of last quarter's return, change the relevant dates and blank out the various boxes so you can enter the current quarter's figures. I would also blank out the bar code as that is related to the quarter of the original return.

The return should be sent to:
VAT Central Unit
Alexander House
Southend-on-Sea
Essex
SS99 1AA

They will also accept a word or excel template providing all the relevant info is on it. Do you want me to email one to you?

That's handy and useful to know.

If using a template, I'd just make sure that the VAT Reference No. is clearly shown as well.

Sound advice Eric - however I don't have a photocopier. I used to take a fax copy but since my fax machine died I take digital photos of each return, saved as a JPG (well I do photography!). I still have the envelope however, so that bit's OK.
