Hi All,

I seem to have discovered a new feature that i'm not sure was put there by the factory - or maybe it was..

1999 Chim 4L, the dash lights are pulsing, i've looked on the forum for answers and it seems that the most obvious place to start looking is the regulator on the dizzy (if i've understood correctly), however,on driving home last night, when the car was up to temp, it wouldn't idle, revs dropping to about 200 then surging up to 1500 then back to 200 etc. I am wondering now if i have a breakdown in an electrical connector that when it gets hot starts playing up. I'm guessing that the again, the obvious places would be leads, plugs etc.

Just wanted any other suggestions of if i've missed something obvious!

Thanks
Mark

It's going to be the alternator causing the pulsing lights - have it checked out by an auto-electrician. It's possible that the running problem is linked into this too, so it's worth sorting out the alternator before any further investigation into that.

I had this before - it was the alternator pulsing along with the engine revolution, on idle it would start to kangaroo the electrics. I really noticed the difference with much smoother running after replacing the alternator.

Got a new alternation for about £100 from ebay, has been good for over 2 years so far.

Yep - headlights started to pulse too.
So it would seem the first thing is to check all connections with the alternator and then if its still doing it - replace it!

Will let you know how it goes - thank you

Try an autofactors, they often have the same part but unbranded for a lot less.

Before you get carried away, get a test meter on the alternator ouput (big fat wire) and measure the voltage. It should be around 14 volts with the engine running. If it fluctuates more than a few 10s of millivolts you have a problem.
