Hi, I need to start accepting credit / debit cards over the phone and online possibly. I have looked at one system wont mention the full name but its WP, I was not very keen on their setup or monthly fees.

Any ideas guys and girls?

Wrong on both counts.

PayPal Website Payments Pro costs £20.00 per month and starts at 3.4% + 20p per transaction, dropping to 1.9% + 20p as volume increases. It comes with a Virtual Terminal so you can take telephone/mail orders.

Thanks for that link Tim, but if what you say is correct why do paypal state on the link you provided
"Low cost. No start-up or monthly fees, no cancellation fees and no minimum payments" ? where you trying to link to another paypal product?

A Basic/business PayPal account doesn't have any monthly fees associated with it, but the Website Payments Pro product does (you need to apply and be vetted and accepted for that service, whereas any monkey can sign up for a regular PayPal account).

It's the product you need to take offline payments, and to integrate CC payments directly off a web site without sending the payee off somewhere else first.

Works a treat; I put several thousand £ a month through it.

And you'll pay a 1% premium per transaction for just VT on it's own. Depends on how much business you're expecting to put through it whether it's worth doing this on it's own or going for the full monty Website Payments Pro.

No, since the thread title is "Accepting credit card over phone and online" and standalone VT product will not give you online payments.

We looked at using Worldpay and Paypal, but their charges are to high.

We eventually settled for LloydsTSB Cardnet http://www.lloydstsbcardnet.com/ and their web site integration payment processing engine called Protx http://www.lloydstsbcard.net/

Outline of fees below.
Setup fee £350
Protx £20 per month
Debit cards 0.33 per transaction
Credit cards 2.39% per transaction
minimum monthly £25

We also believe we get the added benefit of an organisation with a better reputation.

I know of PROTX and the fees seem a lot less than Paypal. I will however only be putting through a few payments now and again to start with, so the higher % V setup and monthly fees is more cost effective at the moment.

Obviously I can see if you were putting through volume sales PROTX would be a very good deal.

That's the killer though. You'd have to put £34,633.66 of credit card transactions through before you saved a single penny against using PayPal at 3.4%+20p and no setup fee.

You can't just look at the transaction fee when comparing services like this!

Well thats an average turnover I guess for most people, guess little tiny minnows like you an I Tim will have to stick with paypal. laugh and leave the big boys with the big expensive systems.

Actually I had mis-calculated. Assuming 3.4% + 20p per transaction, and considering an average transaction of £45 (which is approx what we do) then it's £24,060 before you're ahead.

However if you're doing that sort of volume then you're not likely to be paying 3.4% to PayPal. We're comfortably into the next tier so it'll be 2.9% + 20p = £36,600.

For the ease and speed at which you can put up a new site that takes CC through PayPal's merchant services (without even having to present PayPal to the purchaser), it's a great system.

People whinge about PayPal a lot, but the fact is it's very popular. For example, on our adult site we offer two payment options at checkout; PayPal or direct secure CC entry. It's been about 70/30 split in favour of PayPal so far.
