Having been recommended by most to use Mobil 1 in my car, I went to Costco (where it is apparently cheapest).
Grade of their Mobil 1 is 0W 40. Is that OK for a 993 or should I be looking for a bit heavier eg 5 or 10?
Comments welcome. Thanks.

I would have thought so too, but some people reckon it's too thin, and the Mobil 1 Motorsport 15w50 is better. I generally use 15w50, but mainly because Halfords have some on the shelf and never seem to have the 0w40, so I don't have to make the decision.

You won't go wrong with Mobil Motorsport 15w50 or Castrol RS 10w60.

Thinner oils you are taking your chances - will be fine for some but it will go through other engines like a laxative vindaloo.

Don't want to start another oil war ;-), but the 993's hydraulic tappets are a good reason to use 0-40 - they are often slow to pump up with thicker oils.

Most of the tales of oil leaks when using these grades are on older motors not designed for them ...

I also thought the variocam thing on later 993 models was designed for the thinner oils

It's varioRam on 993s - this is an induction mod. Not sure how oil could affect it... maybe it does?

The 993 engine is based on an old engine design anyway. I'm sure 0w40 would be fine in most 993s, but I can't see the harm in running a decent 10w or 15w oil?

Not an expert, so I'll shut up now

15-50 certainly recomended for 964's (ref: Conversation with Mobil rep at Goodwood FOS) and I always assumed the 993 engine was the same. Expect to pay nearly forty quid for a can.

I heard there were problems with Mobile 1 breaking down!

I have switched to Shell Ultra 5w 40 on the advice of the guy who looks after my car - for what it is worth.

Thanks for all the responses.
As I will be at Goodwood Festival this weekend I will ask the proper questions there(to Mobil) and respond early next week on this site.

If you all read your car manual, you will see that Porsche say that you can use any within the range from 5W -30/50 (Winter) all the way up to 15W - 40/50 (Summer). It all there on page 82 of the 993 manual, check it out...

It's half the price in France.

And I'd want to see some evidence that Mobil 1 breaks down. It's an exceptionally good oil.

Thanks for all the replies. I did look at Goodwood but no Mobil stand and nobody else seemed to have a definitive answer. By the way the Carrera GT was something else and the light blue early RSR was rather smart too.
