Hi all I've just registered as I'm after a bit of technical advice. I own a automatic Astra and was intending to make it a long term project - doing some engine work, upgrading suspension, brakes and bodywork etc. The only problem is that its an auto which I find not at all fun to drive to be honest. I'm considering a conversion to manual but need some advice.
What parts would I need? - obviously the relevant gearbox, clutch, linkage and pedals/stick but i'm sure there will be more to it than that!

and also will it be worth it? Before anyone says, I really can't afford to upgrade to a different car and I would prefer to stick with this as I know my way about an Astra and its a clean shell. Any advice would be ace.

cheers, Phil

I'm guessing it is running an ecu, just looking at the engine side of things you need to know if the gearbox has any link to the ecu, tbh I doubt it, it's only an astra not a bmw/merc etc. So don't expect the box to be computer controlled.

Aside from the obvious then of clutch pedal and cable etc. You might find the auto has different driveshafts, also if it is on a subframe that might be different, also you may have resale issues.

To be honest it isn't worth doing, sell it and buy a manual, the money you'd spend to do the conversion properly (you may be best buying a donor car) would be best put towards a car upgrade.

I suppose that is the sensible option - altough I've just found an Astra being broken with the same engine (although much less mileage) and all the box etc. for cheap.
