FreeScan Help!!!
Discussion
I posted this on the Yahoo board as well... sorry if some of you had to double read this...
Okay... I'm hooking up my car via USB (Com4) and it's getting "Finding
start header" but no car data. Anyone ever get this before??
THe "data" looks like this in the status window:
P: bf - Finding start header
P: f8 - Finding start header
P: 86 - Finding start header
Thoughts??

This occurs when the cable is disconnected or not functioning. u should use a cable with a serial connect rather than a fake com port using USB. As the usb connections tend to make the connection difficult , it is also motherboard dependent, with some it may work, others it may not. A bog standard serial (9 pin)connection is all that is needed and the correct cable.

I haven't seen that one.
I use a serial connection on COM 1. And I seem to remember from when I first configured my FreeScan set up that I had to set it up on COM 1. It didn't seem to like any other port. I also remember that my particular portable computer had an infrared port that would only work on COM 1, so I had to deactivate my infrared port to free up the COM 1 port.
Once you get FreeScan running, remember to click the "Interact" radial button on the top right corner of the "Control" tab. Then hit the "Force Data" button...several times (if needed) until you get data flow.
Good luck...Walt '91 SE

Thanks guys for your suggestions...
Just a tab bit of background... I had this working, at one point in time, on the same laptop via the same USB connector. So, now I'm attempting to troubleshoot the "why" of it working once but not again. I changed the USB to use COM2 rather than COM4 with the same amount of success. I know that the USB connector is working and talking because I hooked up my GPS and it talks fine. Which now points me to my cable. Maybe I'll attempt to hook it up in the back of the car and see if that connector works. Maybe something is wrong with the passenger connector??

Chris,
I have done some experiments last Saturday with both the AndyWhittaker connector and the WOTElectronics connector:
An old Compaq Armada 4110 using RS232: perfect data transfer on both connectors, even with 1ms delay
A newer Sony Vaio C1XD with RS232 via USB: no results and similar results as you indicated. I have suspected the lack of exotic speed at 8192 Baud in the past.
Also on my Vaio, the GPS worked perfectly.
Is there anybody out there successfully using an USB solution?
Response highly appreciated...

The front connector is indeed less reliable than the rear connector, it would certainly be worth your while to switch...
