Sounds like they will be introduced, no time-scales given or even who and where they will start to be rolled out though.

Cat's Eyes will soon be replaced by British company, Astucia's new LED 'road studs'.

The new 'Intelligent Road Studs' charge themselves using solar panels during the day, with two hours of sunlight providing enough energy to power the lights for ten days. The tiny LEDs will be visible from up to a kilometre away, vastly improving night-time visibility on unfamiliar roads.

They are designed to be 'biker friendly' too, since they only protrude above the road surface by a scant 4mm.

Thinking about it, ok they don't stick up much from the road, but in the wet won't the shiny expanse of plastic be even worse?

at last a way to see where the road goes when stuck behind a 40mph freak at night - why do they always drive on dipped beam so unless you know the road you cant judge if its safe to overtake?

They've fitted those or something similar all over a dangerous junction near me.

It's very spooky, as they're quite blue, and you see them in your mirrors and at the side of you. It makes you look for the spaceship....eek

They have them on trial around Wendover in Buckinghamshire. They're very bright and certainly better than normal cats eyes.

Not sure about only needing 2 hours of sun to charge them for 10 days though...the solar lights in my garden barely work for an hour after dusk wink

They've also got them on the Reading road near Woodcote. Quite cool to see at night smile
