Hi. A very wet, cold and windy day in the Brecon Beacons yesterday, but well worth it, was good fun. I'm quite happy with the results of the photos I took considering the wind and lack of decent light for much of the day, but most of the shots were an ISO 1600 job. All taken using a 350d with a Sigma 70-300 APO except the 6th which used a Canon 50mm.
Feedback appreciated!

nice!

you were exactly where i was.. even down to the stadium!!

was having issues with my camera ... that and all the boys with their bigger toys were standing where i wanted to be to get some decent shots.

THAT and the constant shivering with out a tripod made things even harder so just gave up. got one semi decent one of one of the landies (as i was made to stay right till the end) but its still on the camera and havent got round to taking them off yet.

  • edit** just realised i am signed in on my other halfs account. ** oops

Thanks.
I would've liked a bit more motion blur using slower shutter speeds, but I was so cold I could hardly press the shutter button, let alone keep the camera dead stable whilst panning properly!

Nice pics, well done.

I was a bit dissapointed with my effort. Most imgaes came out a bit dark and I probrably should have used my other lens, but you live and learn.

Heres one of the better ones:

Looking at some of mine. I shouldn't have left my lens get covered in water, then smear it clean, then watch it get wet again and so on and so forth.

I have a section of about ten shots where the auto focus had no chance trying to focus through the greasy, fat fingered smearing that I had been liberally applying.

Great pics Jack. Was that "Paras Leap" on Epynt? I've not been to Epynt, did you like it? The Millenium Stadium looks cool too.

I did Port Talbot 1, Rheola 2 and Halfway 1 & 2. My pics are here. Yes I know they need cropping etc but it's not going to happen right now! Like you I was having to use ISO 1600 on my Canon 400D.

Saw (and heard) both Mikkelsons roll and Jones' MG crash from a distance. Not seen a serious crash at a rally before and I must confess I felt a bit uncomfortable when the doctors car went through for the Jones crash. Thank god it was "only" a broken collar bone for Andy Bull, it was one hell of a bang.

My best shots:

ETA Ouch, go to my web page for slightly less jagged versions!

Another coincidence! You must have been within a few feet of me on Halfway

Your pics look OK to me, I had a slower shutter speed than you to get the wheels blurred, but I ended up with a lot of shots which are too blurry to be any use.

You must have literaly been standing next to me!

I attempted to get some blur going on the wheels, but like you say maybe the shutter speed was too high. I was using the settings I would use for circuit racing, so the higher speeds would help with the blur I guess.

Yep, that's Epynt. I've not been to the rally before so can't compare it to the other stages, but there were plenty of places to get a decent view. The only thing was the stage seemed very open so the cars, although going very fast, weren't handbraking round hairpins etc, which would've been fun to watch. If you go next year, watch out for the hail storms!

here's a few of mine, on the 'halfway' stage.

quite happy with a few of them, but rheola where i went last year was much prettier scenery (and better weather!). the quarry at halfway wasn't as impressive as i'd hoped, and by the time the 2nd run was underway it was too dark, even at f1.8/iso1600. so next year i'll try another stage, that runs a bit earlier.

Very nice. What shutter speed were you using on most of those? 1/30th?

Looking at the position of the rock, maybe a few meters away. I was next to the Spanish (maybe?) guys with the umbrellas who were larking about and having a laugh.

Good atmosphere up there I thought, and not so busy you couldn't get to the front too.

Don't remeber the Spanish, so yeah must have been a bit furthur away than I thought.

Not a bad spot for photography, I was at the same place last year, and it never seems too crowded.

Tim, great shots, real sense of drama and speed.

thanks, yeah around 1/30 to 1/50th for the slower ones, and 1/100th for the 2 evos. i usually like to shoot a bit slower, but you only get 1 chance to get each car in rallying so i played it safe. maybe next year i'll go for a couple days, so i can take more risks!

btw millband i meant to say i really liked your 3rd pic with the stones kicking up, and the last one. i didn't even think to bring a tripod, its a great way to capture the stage - really cool how you can see the braking points!

Was a bloke next to us in camouflage waterproofs from head to toe with an SLR and two people to the right with cameras.

Tim: that shot of the Subaru scrabbling away from the camera's brilliant! I know what you mean about playing it safe with the shutter speeds, I didn't want to miss any of them with a blurred shot! Next time though, better gloves, a thermos and some decent attempts at panning I will remember!

Great photos everybody. I thought I'd share a couple from the Millenium Stadium. It was really difficult to get anything decent due to the lack of light. They're all very grainy (ISO 1600!) and blurry. I'll have to brave the cold and wet next year.

These two got the biggest cheer of the night understandably:

I like Subarus by the way, can you tell?
oh...and some bloke in a French car...
