remember roasting chestnuts as a kid on our open fire, seen as we have only a gas fire these days whats the best way of cooking them?

Chestnuts just aren't chestnuts unless they have that slight charring. I would definitely go for the disposable barbie approach... More of a faff, but so much better as an end result.
