I am considering a second-hand D3 Audi A8 at present, and one thing that I cannot seem to find much info on is the Keyless Entry/Go system...

Are there any good info sources on this, that anybody can give me a link to, or an explanation on here?

I think I understand the basics, and I quite like the idea, but I still have a few queries:

Car can be locked/unlocked from 'button' on any door (is this programmable/changeable?);

Car engine can be started/stopped by pressing the start/stop buttons (does the key need to be in the ignition? I have seen mention of a KESSY key - what is this??);

Car can be locked by pressing the button on any door (I assume that it will not simply lock itself when you move "out of range"?)

What is the "range" for picking up the keyfob? - i.e. if the car is "locked" and the car is parked on the driveway, and the key is indoors, could someone else open the car by pressing the button on the car handle? - What are the security/theft implications with this??

Sorry to ask dumb questions, but I don't want to get an option that is going to be more hassle than it's worth!!

Hi my A8 has keyless go,you have to be within about 1 ft of the car before the car recognizes the key,then you just touch the underneath of the door handle and the doors unlock,to lock the car you press the black button on top of the handle,the car will only lock if the key is outside the vehicle once again it needs to be within about 1ft.
The keyless start only works if the key is inside the car it doesn't have to be in the ignition.
So basically all you ever need to do is keep the key in your pocket you never actually have to use it.
I would always have keyless go if possible its one of those things you really miss if you don't have it!

Thanks for the response awg454 - very helpful.

I still have a few outstanding queries that I raised originally (see my original post above), if anybody is able to answer those??
