found my noise - damm xj40 :-(
Discussion
been chasing a knocking noise on my ebay bargain xj40 for a couple of months, ive never even used it because the speedo didnt work - and this noise was so annoying.
fixed the speedo (damm ecu, the water drainer was blocked in the fuel cap hole, so every time it rained it would fill up and seep into the boot and onto the ecu!)
i had all the shafts and diff outputs out of it thinking that the noise was a diff bearing (wasnt) and had strated to think it was a shocker problem.
my brother went to work in it last week and reported that the noise had 'got a lot worse, and now it shudders'
so, this weekend i jacked it up and noticed oil all over the diff (we had just refilled it) and all the rear suspension. as i turned a wheel the propshaft did the dance of death and spewed more oil out the pnion seal.
ooppps. i guess either the crownwheel or the pinion has thrown a tooth off, or the pinion bearing has collased.
either way, ive got the whole lot to remove! curses!
its gonna be a lot of work for a 400 quid xj40, but its in really nice condition and it seams a shame just to give up on the old girl and scrap it.

Picked up an XJ40 on eBay recently too. It's got a few minor niggles but drives really well.
The blocked drainer in the fuel cap hole must be a common problem as it happened on this one too ('94 M plate). I had just washed and waxed the car and came out within 30mins of tidying everything away to find a leak coming from what seemed like the rear diff...
...Alas, only water slowly dripping out from the drain hole which was a relief. I'll keep an eye on this though as I certainly don't want water getting in to the ecu.
