728-Your views

What are your views on a 2001 plate 728.

Not a huge amount of engine for a fairly substantial car, but willing enough.

Have you seen one of a certain price/spec that you want an opinion on, or just general thoughts on the model?

My mates just bought one (from carshaft i may add).Just wondered if theres any problems with them and what there like to drive.The car is fairly basic Full leather but thats about it,No Sat Nav etc.

Not powerful enough. 0-60 takes almost 10 seconds which far a big BMW just isn't quick enough.

Go for a 740i, if you dont fancy the V8 costs, get a 528i instead - same engine in a car quite a bit lighter, and will hit 60 in 7.something with the autobox.

Very nice car, quite slow. It's big and the 200-ish BHP engine isn't enough to move it around in the way it deserves.

As suggested above, consider the 740i. Running costs will be quite high but it'll move properly.

I've got a 528i (manual). It's a great car. Fewer toys than a V8 7er, but considerably cheaper to run both in terms of fuel and servicing. And arguably better to drive.

I know ive posted it on General Gassing Forum, but thought there maybe people that come onto a BMW dedicated forum that may be able to shed more light on this model as well.

I've posted on threads before about the 728's and how highly I rate them based on my old mans who has done 185k in his 1998 728i and its been the most reliable car he's owned so much so he is finding it hard to get rid and buy a replacement so will probably run it into 200,000+ or until it dies. He had a 1990 730i before then which he ran to 190k so is a bit of a fan of them. It costs very little to run in terms of servicing/repairs, does 27 mpg average, around 40k per set of tyres and only recently has stuff started to wear out like the drivers door handle! Still on original suspension, engine, box, steering, exhaust etc. Replaced fuel tank last year as it split and the radiator a year or so before. When its clean it looks like new and there isn't a spot of rust on it. Maybe he was lucky but I think its the same old thing if you get one that has genuinely been looked after and serviced you can't go far wrong.
