What's the difference between the 911 and the 996?

It's been annoying me for a while seeing the different adverts for each model, but in my porsche brochure they only have 911's and bosters. No 996's.

The term 911 is a generic one for "the car that everyone recognises as a 911" recent Porsche models that have filled the 911 market niche are:

964,
993,
and now 996.

Basically its the modern day 911.

The way I understand it, 911 is the model "name". 996 is the factory designator, just as was 993, 964, 951 etc etc.

...in BMW terms, '911' is, say, equivalent to the '3-series' model, with '996' equivalent to the 'E46' designation.
