Power improvement Chimaera 5.0
Discussion
Hello
I got some offers from 3 different companies to get more power for my Chim 5.0
Who have experience with the recommended options and companies. Fell you are
huge difference between before and afterwards? Have you a better acceleration?
Is it the worth the money?

the K&N filter and smooth bore induction pipe do have a notable benefit and will probably add around 5 bhp to your output. I would suggest that the best gains are to be had from the cylinder heads, camshaft and induction parts. The cylinder heads are pretty big on a TVR 500 so the ports need to be matched on the inlet manifold for better air flow, I would recommend having a local machine shop make sure that the ports are perfectly matched with no overlapping of the inlet and head inlet ports. I would also have the trumpet base machined to 45 mm and fit radiused aluminium trumpets and then port match the top of the inlet manifold to the trumpet base. Finally I would recommend a camshaft change … this is a very difficult item to recommend as it is reflected in your driving style but a good choice would probably be the Stealth camshaft. With all of these modifications I believe that you will reach or exceed the figures you are looking for. The induction parts are available as a package at xxx , the camshaft kit is xxx and you will require a few gaskets and seals at xxx.
2. ACT
1 smooth bore induction pipes, lhd cars are difficult as there are no kits but we can normally do something, at least supply smooth bore pipe for the first section and better filter hose to air meter from plenum , K&N filter for RHD cars we supply a kit with all pipes smoth bore with clips and heat sleeve & filter .
2 Trumpet (induction air horn) replacement, for this we remove the steel tubes in the plenum base and replace with Carbon fibre trumpets exchange or alluminium £195 exchange.
3 Tornado ECU chip
4 enlarged throttle from 65mm to 71mm exchange
3. RPI Engineering
Tornado ECU chip ( special variant for 500 Griff)
Adjustable fuel pressure regulator.
Mallory Unalite distributor or upgrade original with our A&R amp
Magnecore plug wires
What do you think, would be the best choice, until now I removed the pre cats and have a smooth bore inductions pipe with a K&N filter
Best Regards
Manfred

It all sounds pretty good to me from V8D and ACT, I have the smoothbore piping K&N, Stealth Cam and triple de-cat - works very well noticable gains with complete driveability.
As for RPIs? I personally wouldn't bother upgrading or modding the dizzy you would be far better junking it in favour of a Megasquirt system, you could then nicely dial in a 404 cam.

Would any of this be worth doing to a 450?
Was thinking of getting the ACT inlet package installed...
The inlet package improves all models, I am usually apprehensive about gains for simple airflow upgrades but I got the kit from Tim and the car immediately felt crisper, not sure about bhp but the car was certainly more energetic. Was thinking of getting the ACT inlet package installed...
Can recommend the inlet trumpets/71mm plenum and ECU change.
I have just dumped the 14CUX and AFM in favour of a Megasquirt.. and just last weekend finished installing 45mm trumpets (replace 44mm steel tubes!!) and a 71mm plenum.
Noticeable improvemnt in response.. revs out to 5800rpm cleaner and a alot quicker. It's been a fantastic DYI project.. not to mention an excellent learning curve.
3.0 bar fuel regulator and EDIS are next.. then longer term maybe a cam.

Hello,
I bought th book TVR Performance Portfolio 1995-2000. I found figures for acceleration for the Chim 5.0 0-60 miles = 5.2 sec and 0-100 miles =13,4 sec the Chim 4.0 have similar values. This sounds a little bit strange for me. What is a realistic value for the Chim 5.0 bevore and after power improvemnets?
I don't wont to change in this Megasquirt, because in Germay it is very difficult to find a specialist
for TVR.
Best Regards

Hello,
I also check older tests and i found one from a Griff 5.0 (1993) with following figures
0-60 miles = 4.1sec
0-100 miles = 10.5 sec
0-120 miles = 14.8 sec
The Chim 5.0 (1998) have followings
0-60 = 5.2sec
0-100 = 13,4 sec
0-120 = 21 sec
What have TVR changed on the cars and how can I achieve the excellent vigures form the "old" Griff??
Best Regards
Manfred

I guess the different performance figures are down to different testing conditions for example some magazines test the cars with a full tank of fuel and a passenger others i suppose dont and of course 0-60 times are a bit of a lottery too winter, summer tyres etc all play their part plus i think the odd special car can be released for the mags to test as well .
Regards Paul.
