Bit of a longshot, but I wondered if anyone here had a press pass for the ROC?

Apparently we're not going to be allowed to take "serious cameras" in without one. I suspect to the monkeys on the turnstiles this will be anything vaguely resembling an SLR or maybe even anything upwards of a camera phone!

Please drop me a reply or PM if you are.

Chris.

I'm going and want to take my SLR (i'm just in the stands no press pass btw) but from going to the football I was told to put my SLR in the car... I came on the train so the car was about 30miles away! They would not let me in!

I ended up stuffing it under my coat and getting it in although the minute I used it (its only a 350D ) I was told to leave hehe I just said i would not take pictures.....

Wont be taking it to the ROC.

Why are SLR's being banned from these events?

Are the pro's that insecure?

It will probably have something to do with the professionals & media appointed by the organisers taking priority and not wanting to risk any exposure by lingering professionals out of their control

I had this problem at a rugby match, just a normal club game, not an international. I was told if they saw the camera again, it would be confiscated. I was however aloud to take photos up until kick-off?

Used it again at a different club ground, and there was no problem, front row, right next to a steward.

It's becoming more and more common for buildings and event promoters to restrict use of cameras (both photo and video) at their events so that they can retain as much of the coverage (and therefore copyright to the images and video) as possible and normally when you have a media pass the promoter of the event can and often will demand copies of everything as part of the agreement to you getting a pass anyhow...

Some example text that you can find at many venues now (Excel Centre for this example)...

Camera Policy
Following rules are general and can be overridden based on a specific request from the attraction or promoter:

Sporting Events:
Non-flash, still cameras of any type may be used to take pictures of sporting events or events where house lights are illuminated during a performance. Any tripod or other photography equipment may not be used or placed in any area of the building without building issued Media Credentials.

Concerts and other events:
Cameras with a detachable lens or lens of more than two inches are prohibited from all Xcel Energy Center concerts. The use of flash photography is also prohibited. The Event Producer reserves the right to deny camera use at any time during or before the concert and to prohibit the use of any camera that is deemed unacceptable.

  • Video Recorders or Digital Cameras with recording capabilities are prohibited at any time during an event. The Xcel Energy Center reserves the right to examine and prohibit use of any camera that its personnel deems unacceptable. Tape recorders are not allowed at any time at Xcel Energy Center. Failure to comply with the Xcel Energy Center Camera Policy may result in the film being confiscated.

I've just got an email from the organisors, I get the distinct impression they weren't aware of this!

I'll probably be coming on the train too, so don't want to risk being turned back. I guess I'll have to leave the camera at home unless I can persuade them to give me a pass.

Getting your hands on a press pass for the ROC sadly isn't an easy task as there's a massive line of people trying to do the same and this normally means the regular snappers that the organisers etc know get first dibs with only a few spare (even if that)...

You can find pics from our coverage of 2005 and 2006 at the following links:-

2005 - Race Of Champions

2006 - Race Of Champions

A press pass at the Stade de France only got you to within the first few rows of the seats in the stadium - they were strict about not letting press anywhere inside the centre of the arena last year, but with us doing a lot of PR for Terry Grant who regularly performs at the show John was able to get access that none of the other media pass holders could...

One face that will be sadly missed is Mr McRae this year, but I look forward to seeing the tribute they plan to pay him at the event...
