Hello all wavey

I've posted in here previously, but tend just to lurk for some reason. scratchchin

I'm currently bike-less, but I've decided that I'm fast getting bored of silly fast cars I can't enjoy for 8 months of the year so it's time to rekindle my enthusiasm for bikes, as well as mudplugging in 4x4's but that's for a different section.
Recently booked into Keith Code's California superbike school as a treat for next year, which has whet my appetite even more. Not expecting it to turn me into the next Rossi, but it's something I've long wanted to do.
History wise I grew up with crossers and stuff but road bikes I've usually just bagged the odd lend of a mates spare bike, which was nice of him. I Had a GSXR 750 in TT centenary colours last year but sold it before I got the chance to ride it thanks to the car swallowing up far more cash than I wanted and a great offer being presented for it.

So I'm now keen to get as much experience as possible, hoping to get a good few thousand miles in next year and really ramp up the learning side of things, with a view to being fairly competent on track days as soon as possible. Obviously I'll be needing a bike first, something that should hopefully be happening soon. Not a total newbie to bikes by a long stretch, more a case of wanting to know how to do things properly and learning how to ride as best I can.

Haven't decided what bike I want next yet, far too many out there for it to be a clear cut decision, at the minute I'm torn between a fireblade (1000) and a millie R, but there's always that voice in the back of my mind telling me a ZX7R would be a better idea with some money spent on bringing it a little up to date. Always been a fan of the old 7R's and would love one before they get any more long in the tooth. I'm also keen to get some track work in next year and learn how to ride properly, so perhaps it's a better idea as I'd be slightly less bothered about binning it.

Anyway that's enough waffling on from me, I'll be sure to post in here more often and share my hopefully soon-to-be bike buying adventures with you all. biggrin

cheers,
Stu smile

Morning mate!
Glad to hear you're "back"!! CSS are fantastic. I've not done all levels, but they are quality. Which track are you on?

Gixer 750....you know you want to.

Cheers.

Yeah I've only heard good things about them so I can't wait to get there. I'm at silverstone in april for the level one tuition.
Another Gixer had crossed my mind, there was a lovely K7 750 in black at the dealers yesterday screaming my name.

750 I reckon with some money spent on suspension and setting up of the bike to your weight and riding, the 750 is a very flickable bike like a 600 but with more power.

Hi Stu, Have you had that Skyline long? I've seen one parked outside Kens, maybe a couple of years back.

Anyway welcome aboard, might see you up the hill sometime, I might be there this Saturday.

There's no substitute to getting advice off mates if you're coming back into it. As for riding schools I've tried most of 'em and I have to say Ron Haslam's Race School is the best I've tried so far. It's awesome. I do one advanced riding day a year too. And Rapid Skills are superb. No pretentious ex-coppers (well, they're ex or serving coppers some of 'em but not pretentious!) And you have a bloody good day too.

Going for a ride with a more experienced mate is cheaper and the next best thing. So that's something to do too.

Probably mine mate, I've had it coming up for 2 years now, it's changed a bit recently but to the passing observer it's always been silver with white wheels (used to have polished rim but they're all white nowadays). Was parked up outside Ken's yesterday as it happens smile

I'll probably be there on saturday myself mate, hoping to go through in the early afternoon before maybe having a quick run up to Ian bell's to see if anything jumps out, or rather see if one bike jumps out more than they all do hehe Give me a shout if you see me, always nice to put names to faces, I'll be the tall fat guy sitting on everything he sees. hehe

Bertie:
Thanks for the advice, the CSS day was a christmas prezzie after the hint was taken that I'd really like to do one of them, heard nothing but good things and would like to try at least level 1 and 2.
I will be doing as much training as I can fit in, along with loads of road riding with more experienced mates. Really want to ramp up my ability and skill as fast as possible. Haslam's looks good, I'm keen to do quite a few of them but it's expensive, see how next year goes but track tuition is a must for me.
It's not that I'm coming back to biking par se (too young to be a BAB), just haven't had the chance to do much in the last year or two, 500 miles total I'd say.

Nice skyline....even though the new breeds are faster, I , like you have a soft spot for the ZX7...probably because of Chris Walkers BSB years making them look so good...might be a bit off the pace though I suppose ..
Always liked the look of a ZX9 engine conversion in one though...wink
Whatever you get, you will have a ball......yes

Cheers guys, cracking section.

Did a bit of bike shop browsing yesterday, met up with Biker's Nemesis at a bike shop and promptly started salivating over a new R1, but I'd rather have something second hand to break before taking that on track next year hehe

Yeah the appeal of a ZX7R with a 9R engine transplant is definately there, but I think it's down to one of two bikes having looked around a bit this weekend, R1 or ZX10R. Got around 5k to play with, maybe a bit more for the right bike, which seems to be enough to pick up some cracking examples.
I've yet to sit on a ZX10R, couple of folks have mentioned they might be a bit small for me, so popping over to the local kawasaki dealer on monday to see smile

Nice to meet you Stu, eventually. hehe Did you find your way home OK?

The ZX10, is quite roomy, for me anyway, and you are roughly the same height as me.

O4/05 ZX10 would be right up your street. Let us know what you decide.

LoL thanks again for your help mate, I'd still be up there now if I was stuck relying on the GPS! Got home fine eventually, took a couple of hours though thanks to the snow over the tops!

To be honest they all sound pretty suitable, out of the big 4 anyway. Had my heart set on a millie but fast went off them when I sat on it. Just not the bike for me.

Hopefully should have a firm idea of what I want on monday!

I've done all the CSS and the Ron Haslam school twice - think they are both great but quite different from each other - decent advanced road skills & awareness is always good to refresh if you're a road rider - even after 21 years of riding and owning around 18 bikes with no 'career' breaks I still did something each year to keep my skills topped up.

Everyday's a schoolday :-D

Hoping to get to the BMW off road school in the spring with a mate of mine - not been on a bike for 2 years by then so it'll be interesting, I'm bound to be better than him though so that's ok by me ;-)

A male 'friend'? Do you have such things 'Mol? Let's hope he knows what he's doing going that far with you. They're in Wales, you know. Hell of a trek to go just to spend a bit of time getting mucky with you.
