X Type Starter Motor Diesel Jag

I have a problem with the starter motor on my diesel X Type but I cannot for the life of me see how to remove it. Have tried from above by removing the air box and from below by removing the floor tray. I cannot see the fixings and even if I do remove them I dont think there is space to get the thing out.
Can anyone tell me the trick to changing a starter motor without removing the engine????????
