hiya all,
i am thinking about buying a 730d, o3,o4,under 100,000mls
what should i look for to determine a good one from a bad one,
i have been told that they are easy to clock,
why is that,
does that apply to the 530d or is just the 730d
do all 730d,s come with xenons,
bit in the dark with this model any advice would
be appriciated, i dont have deep pockets,
getting on abit and need a bit of comfort,
ta billy.

Hi Billy

A few answers:

The 730d was facelifted around 2005, the earlier model was prone to electrical and gearbox gremlins but most should have been sorted under warranty. Not all had xenons, they were an option and not many had them fitted. They were and still are easy to adjust mileage on, circa a £400 non BMW option so do the normal checks but look for shiny leather on the seats, especially in the rear to see if it has 'worked' in its life, as most were used as chauffeur/exec cars.
If you get a good one then they are an absolute bargain, mid 30s mpg, loaded with all the goodies and are good for 250k.
Just make sure you get the correct wheels, the 'poverty spec ones look dreadful.

hiya nigel,
thanks for the information,
lots of good points,
when you say gremlins are they serious issues that if not
sorted under warranty, could cost loads, ie, the gearbox,
sounds like it,
still fancy one though, they look very comfy.
cheers, billy

The only serious issues we had in the early days were gearboxes, but they all were fixed under warranty, and every now and then the idrive would decide not to work.

Don't buy a silver one, try to get a dark colour and above all check its history, most if not all would have had service pack up to 60k so its then the mileages need checking. Good luck, get a good one and you'll love it.

I'd say if its outside of a BMW dealership purchase then i'd have the mileage checked anyway. It should only be a matter of ringing a BMW dealer. Your nice shiny 48K mile example could have had 90K on it the previous week.
