Engine Numbers
Discussion
Dear Pistonheads,
I stumbled across broadbean747's interesting and eloquent piece of 25/07/2005 whilst trying to find some definitive information on V8 engine numbers.
There is little I can add other than that the Jaguar V8's engine numbers have indeed altered to a time and date basis, rather than an ever increasing serial number. The number starts with two letters and is followed by ten numbers. The ten numbers are purely the date and time the engine was built.
My own XJ8 3.2, registered on 08/09/2000 has the engine number KC0001201515 -this means that the engine was manufactured on 20th January 2000 at 15:15.
For your information the first steel-linered engine had a number XX000818XXXX, meaning that it rolled off the production line on 18th August 2000.
Judging by the time of manufacture and date of registration of my car there must have been firstly a fair few nicasil blocks to use up, and secondly some confirmation about how slowly the XJ must have been selling at the time.
I hope this clarifies a rather obscure subject just a little.

This gets more confusing.....
Your info makes mine a April 27 engine, built at 0123, in a 05/07/2000 registered car.
I thought the last 6 figures in the VIN number gave the clue though. If you had a letter followed by 5 numbers you had a steel lined engine, and if there were 6 numbers and no letter you had a Nicasil coated block...?
Not that it really matters now but it's nice to know.

Hi Jaguar steve,
Your engine number is therefore XX0004270123, I guess?
Whilst broadly right on the VIN number front, a serial F followed by 5 numbers is no guarantee at all of a steel-linered engine. It merely happens that Jaguar started this new global chasis numbering system for 2000. Engine numbers remain engine numbers and mustn't be confused with the car build (VIN).

Yes indeedy, well spotted, it starts with KC. So it's a Nikasil lump then?Your engine number is therefore XX0004270123, I guess?
