Hi all,

My alternator failed yesterday on my 54 Plate T350 was stuck on the side of the road for 3 hours, rather embarrasing.

Anyway I have done a few search's and found that a like for like replacement is not recomended and a Lucas Replacement is the best!!

Do any of you have a part number to hand for any replacement?? Plus some feedback if any of you have replaced one would be great.

Thanks in advance,

Lloyd

Before you replace it, check the inline fuse. Do a search on here for the 100A fuse.

yes Not heard of an alternator failure, but this fuse in alt. cable frequently overheats and fails if not perfectly installed.

Here we go

Remove the air box by undoing the two allen head bolts on the fuel rail and three toggles, the two on the o/s and one on the other hidden between the box and inlet port.

Cable ties maybe fitted to the o/s toggles to stop them springing open.

Take the oil tank breather hose and small bore vacuum hose off the front top, and the air temp sensor cable off the box off then manipulate forward, remove the small bore pipe at the back of the box then lift out, then remove the filter. To remove the bottom half of the air box, undo the front bolt and two rear ones and lift out. It's worth fitting some larger section viton 'O' rings to the throttle bodies to get a better fit with the air box and stop the engine getting blown with breather oil mist.

The alternator main fuse is in a black plastic rectangular fuse holder (with a cable tie wrap around it) on the red cable between the starter motor and the alternator.

After replacing the 100amp strip fuse and charging/starting making sure the the battery is charging on the the display before putting the box back on. A warning ' EFI fault 4' will appear on the display: this is because the air temp sensor is not connected and will not re-appear once re-connected later.

Hope this helps

Just wanted to say for all the advice, Checked the fuse and low and behold it was blown plus the holder had melted at one end.

I found the connections were loose which i'm hoping was the main cause. Just gotta wait for my new one to arrive- plus due to being towed home (40 miles) and not having to pay for the bridge....in all i've actually managed to save myself about 10 quid .

I think it's great the way pistonheads groups together to help people with problems!!

A big thanks to you all,

Lloyd
