Whining noise

Guys,

had a first ride today with the new LS7 installation and after a couple of miles it started making quite scary noises. I`m pretty sure that it`s not the engine, the noise comes from the clutch housing. It`s a screaming noise (no rattling) as soon as the engine starts, clutch engaged or not...

Any suggestions where to begin?

how could I possibly find out if it`s the starter? I can start the engine easily and I`m pretty sure it began during the drive...

How can the release bearing make such a terrible noise? I`m sure I fitted everything correctly in the gearbox, before the testdrive I couldn`t hear a thing from the gearbox, all was very quiet as it should be (except for the engine of course)

Could it be the pilot bearing? If its not the starter as mentioned above, you'll have to slide it apart to investigate. I bet the pilot bearing was put in backwards.

It will not be the pilot bearing as the noise is still there with the clutch engaged.

My vote is the release bearing but will not be just a simple lack of grease type thing. I think this will be something like lack of clearance in the new LS install/adaptor plate.

Where's your adaptor plate from? Could it be a dimensional problem with that?

There were no women allowed on that short drive - they tend to bring too much baggage even on the shorted trip (i.e. weight).

It can`t be the adapter plate as I used the same one that was installed on the prvious engine (LS6), it basically was a plug-and-play swap. Maybe I can upload a soundfile but it isn`t a pleasure to listen to it.

What ways are there to find out if it`s the starter or the release bearing?

The adaptor may have worked on the previous engine but are you sure the crank does not extend further or is the flywheel different.

I left everything unchanged, used the same clutch assy, same gearbox. When maneuvering the car in the garage with the engine running everything sounded ok. If I remember correctly the reverse gear couldn`t be engaged for a while after the noise started until it eventually slid in...

Is the gear linkage fouling the rear grill and trying to select a different gear whilst driving. Reverse would be one of the worst gears.

Paul, I wasn`t aware that the pilot bearing could be intalled in two ways. Could this actually cause such a noise? As I started the engine again yesterday (i.e. it was cold) the noise was gone...
Any more hints?

could still be the release bearing as when on the way out they tend to squeal when hot.

My Sport made a strange noise when I put a new clutch in - it turned out to be the fly wheel lightly scraping the inside of the bell housing. The noise became worse when it became hot.
