I have to say that I am still plodding along with Photoshop 7, which doesn't support processing of my 40D RAW files, so I've been thinking of upgrading.

However I now discover that there is something called Photoshop Elements and Photoshop CS3 available, and I'm confused. Which is the natural successor to Photoshop 7, or is there not much to choose between either of the new products?

The natural successor to PS7 was CS, then CS2 and now CS3. I went from PS7 to CS3 and it's whole new ballgame. At the same time as upgrading I bought the book "Adobe Photoshop CS3 for photographers" by Martin Evening. Boy am I glad I did!

Martin.

Thanks Martin. I enjoy using 7, but as I get more into digital manipulation, I am gettting the sense that 7 is a bit long in the tooth now, and I reckon I may start to get frustrated with it in the not too distant future.

Go with Photoshop Elements 6 - it has more than you'll ever need, and costs about £69.

The full CS at £400 odd is for the professional image makers or real hard core enthusiasts!

if you do, be VERY careful and virus check anything you download.

I am not speaking from experience, but a friend tells me that a lot of CS3 downloads have trojans in them - especially the "activation code" keygens.

Apparently CS2 ones are fine, though.
