My little red battery light is on when the car is switched off. When driving it is off.

I'm sure it will be an earth problem but before I go and dismantle the car are there any obvious culprits? Oh and it is not the starter motor or the front offside earth strap as I have tried these..........

Your ignition is staying live when the key is off, try pulling the ignition relay (its the one with BIG terminals) - if that fixes it the relay is probably knacked.

another bit of information is that the light is on with the keys removed.

Like the idea of the ignition relay as my fuel pump ones needed replacing and we all know when one thing electrical goes they all go!

I'll let you know..........

Check the ignition switch itself I would say.

You can pull the spade term off the alt and see if that is live with a mm (to the light, and to the alt) - but the diode should only light when the dash is higher pd than the alt..

If the dash circuit is live the other instruments should still register...

For those of you who may have been interested I have solved the light problem.

Funnily enough the diode pack on the alternator was the problem yet again. The main body of the alternator goes on fopr years but the electornics controlling the darn thing don't.

It is a Magnelli part RGL 10006. Bolts stright on as a replacement
