I am after a bit of advice.

How often should the timing belt be changed on a 2.8 VR6 Passat. When I bought the car the owners manual was not included so I was wondering how often it should be replaced.

Thanks again for your time

Its a 1999. Does that make any difference?

I am pretty sure that it is a timing belt though.

Thanks again

The VR6 engine uses a timing chain, and you generally don't need to replace it until it starts to rattle. This doesn't usually happen until you've passed 100k miles.

You have a V6 engine the same as the Audi A4 A6 A8 2.8 5v V6. This does need a timing belt. Do the water pump at the same time to save on doing it later.

Agree. Syncro / 4 Motions have Audi engines.

I had mine changed at 80K. One mother of a belt from what I recall.

Thanks,

I am not going mad.

I know the Jetta VR6 has a chain but I was sure that mine had a belt.

What is the recommended age?

My car is coming up for 80,000 miles so I guess I should get it done now.

There seems to be some confusion here. The "VR6" engine is chain driven.

But the engine is not a VR6 engine in the passat.

As pointed out it is an Audi engine with does indeed have a belt.

Ah well, that's different then. wink

My answer was obviously for the VR6 engine (as originally asked) and not the Audi V6 engine. smile
