even without comparing features of the two cameras, one thing you need to do is go and handle both of them. When I was originally looking to go from film to DSLR, I was considering the Canon 350D but did not like how small it was and with reasonable size hands, I just found it awkward. I then ended up with the 20D which felt much more like my old Pentax Super-A film SLR. The Nikon grip just didn't work for me either.
So, go and handle them before making any sort of decision but obviously also ask yourself what sort of features and quality you need too.

I bought a 30D instead of a 400D so the 40D would be an easy choice for me
If you haven't been to look at the cameras in a shop then i would strongly advise doing so. That alone convinced me of the virtues of the 30D over the 400D. Much better construction, MUCH better interface, spot metering, etc..
For now i'd seriously look at a used 5D, but i think i'll wait till after the 5d mk2 is released to see what the prices do
Cheers.
