Video converters

Can anyone recommend a good (free) video converter,I am trying to convert avi to mpeg or something I can burn to a dvd.
It wont let me burn it at the moment.

eRightSoft Super is pretty good for video conversion.

Apparently the latest versions of Nero offer an all-one conversion/burning solution.

And if you've got Vista Home Premium, that comes with the "wonderful" Windows DVD maker application (which takes an eternity to re-code videos for DVD playback)
