I ordered a new x5 in August 07, and have been waiting for the car since. It has now (today) turned up in the garage and the dealership (now I know what everyone means by stealer) is trying their very best to force me to register it before the end of 2007.

Of course we all know that the residual of the car will be worse than waiting till the 2nd of jan 08, so I have asked them to register it then (was told £2000 worse). Of course this upsets their figures for 2008, so they are doing everything possible to force me to have the car.

I have told them I have no problem paying in full for the car now, no problem to me, but a big one to them it would seem.

I am now threatened by them that the car will be 'sold on' to someone who wants the car and I can have one reordered for the the end of 2008. Disgraceful I think.

So, anyone else been treated like this, I just done expect it. **** **** BMW are manufacturer owned, so you expect the customer to come first, but not today.

Worse still I have now sold my old car as they told me around new year a week ago and with me being away over xmas, I thought I could let it go now... not good.

One seriously upset potential BMW customer....

Any views???

When was the car originally expected?

If you expected it in 2007 then you're the one now deciding that you want a 2008 registered vehicle and it's not the dealer who's being awkward.

However, if you expected it in 2008 then you need to sit down with the dealer principal and discuss this 'loss' of £2000 due to a couple of week's earlier registration.

If they've got a customer waiting for one (who may be willing to pay a premium to jump the queue) then they won't budge, but if they're just yanking your chain then they'll likely come to some agreement for a free service or something.

Depends how much you want it really, and what the original delivery estimate was.

mmm, understand your point. I was told week 40, this year, which was about 2 months ago. That would be absolutely fine, but a week before the new year, registering it seems a bit rediculous.

Thanks for the comments.

What's to stop you from buying it unregistered and storing it somewhere off-road for two weeks? Ifyou did that you'd think there's bugger-all they can say or do about when you chose to register it. Just get it insured on the chassis number.

I did say deliver it to me now and then register it on the 2nd Jan, but another barrier went up after saying that they just needed to 'deliver' the car now. I suggested exactly what you said and suddenly it must be taxed and registered as well.
They have promised to call me back with their chairmans reply this morning, so lets see what happens.

I thought the customer came first...not if its a target that they are after.

BMW in their wisdom have seen it fit to end a dealer registration month/year err ........... today!!! laugh yes thats right halfway through the month.

This may be why **** **** are pushing you hard to get the car registered. However with a bit of forward planning and asking you nicely they may have avoided the situation you are now in. Had you thought of asking for an incentive to persuade you to register it now (the £2000 you mentioned???)

Edited to add -

You ordered a car August 07 and it turned up 4 months later. They tell you if you re order it wouldn't be here till end of 08. Somebody is not being 100% truthful (sp) me thinks wink

And

They can't sell your car until your order has been cancelled in writing. Take a look at your order it may say something like - you have 28 days from when we inform you your car is ready to collect it. If you fail to collect the vehicle then your order will be cancelled and the vehicle sold to another party.

What has that got to do with it? The op is prepared to pay for it this year and that is all that should matter. As a Dp, I know about targets but you simply can't pressure customers like this!!

As it is a MY08 car what difference does the week of registration make? Not as if you'll get an 08 plate until March so 2k seems a bit weird?

It was only to point out where you may be able to put pressure back on the dealer by pointing out you'd agreed an '08 delivery and it's their fault for the early delivery.

You are obviously one of the better ones then as we hear (and I've been on the receiving end) of some of the useless ones.

Because some people put a lot of value (£2k in this case) on a car REGISTERED in the new year - even if it is actually MANUFACTURED earlier. Personally I'd buy the £2k cheaper one wink

I've had a new car paid for and delivered on trade plates to my house one week before the new month.
The dodgy bit was that it wasn't insured until the first of the month.

Yes, but would you want your car registered now knowing it was going to be worth 2K less come trade in time compared to if you registered it a week later?

It was designed to reduce the massive peaks in registrations around the jan and august plate changes. An 07 car will be worth less than an 08 car no matter what the plate on it says.

The old plate change was every August.

The diference between an 07 and 08 year car is a couple of hundred quid, no way near the £2000 mark come trade in time.

If the car was ordered for delivery this year then it's not **** ***** fault but the OP's and tbh the thread title is a little over dramatic!

Unfortunately I would like to agree with your posting, but it is totally incorrect. If you open the 'black book' at almost any £55000 car at one year old, so its either a 56- 06 year car or a 56- 07 year car, you will see almost £2000 difference at this point.

So when I come to sell the car I can assume that this will be the difference I face. Of course when it comes to Part ex time, dealers are only too willing to talk about this big difference, but at new car they try and pretend it does not happen.

I also ordered the car some months ago, with the only idea of when I would receive it being the 'delivery will be notified when build slot allocated' the only comment on the order form. Until two days before this post I was unaware of its delivery time.

My main grievance was the dispicable way that I was treated, I was mislead about the terms of sale, I was threatened that if I didnt pick the car up on the 14th it would be sold to someone else, pretty much any tactic was used to make me have the car on the date they say.

So I would still say that **** **** BMW were underhand, rude and to a customer who wants to spend £50k plus with them, not good.

Please may I remind everyone that we have a clear policy on not naming and shaming companies. Please leave names out and/or discuss them offline. We have no way of verifying any horror stories and so it is unfair to malign companies on here.

There appears to be a lot of problems with the dealers and discounts now. I was recently offered no discount at all, not a penny on a 330i M sport convertible as they could not deliver in 2007. Two dealers let me walk. The third offered me 5% on a 335i convertible if I took delivery this year, which I did last week. I ended up getting a 335 cheaper than a 330. All the dealers say their hands are tied for 2008 deliveries. How this affects you I am not sure, but its the 1st time ever I haven't been able to strike a deal.
