Independent heater for E92

Whilst passing time exploring the i-Drive (sat in stationary traffic before anyone asks) I noticed there is a timer setting for switching on interior ventilation or heating whilst the car is locked. The book says the heating facility is an option and runs off the main battery and is to warm the car and thaw the windscreen in cold (freezing) weather. Does anyone have this option, has anyone had it fitted and if so how much did it cost? The local dealer was supposed to be getting back to me...

Hi there - had that option in the five series (with a bulky remote control, hence never really used the timer). Quite comfy in winter, when the car is left outside. I have a heated garage though, so no point for me. Obviously, having the system aftermarket will be more expensive...
The ventilation works without the option, although the heating will only work when and so long your car is warm (ie has just been driven) - same as hitting the middle button on the right temp. switch when ignition is off (says "rest" on mine - I'm sure it'll say something else in english
).
However, I think I'll remember that you can't have the external heater with the M-package (think it had to do with the available space behind the front bumper). AFAIK - you'll dealer will tell you no doubt if this is true.

What they have gone too is whats called PTC.Its a clever devise and in its basic form works in the same way as a kettle.As with all vehicles you have a heater matrix inside the Dash board,what they have done is reworked the matrix and added in plates which heat up when 12v is appied thus warming the coolant in the matrix.
This unit is standard fit to all dervs.the preheat time can be set via i drive or prof stereo and will work from about 8'c down,as yet I have not seen or heard of an external remote for these.Also will only work if the battery is charged.
As for E39,X5 etc the webasto unit is fitted as standard and is operational using OBD functions or MID functions (page 81 rings a bell)
