Planning a west coast of Scotland tour next year, and may be using the Mallaig to Skye ferry, rather than drve all the way round to the bridge via Fort William. Anyone used this service in their TVR? Is it friendly to low front splitters? Thanks.

I've never done the ferry, but the drive to Mallaig from Ft William is worth it on its own.. especially if you do it very early in the morning, just watch out for manic fish lorries..

Been on it in an Astra.

The ramp is pretty severe and not sure it would be good in the Tam. Depends if someone has done it before, though. I think I'd drive. Some nice roads leading to the bridge.

It was fine in my Boxster - and that has one of those silly low front skirts designed to skim speed bumps and scrape them. yes You should be fine with care, I'd say...

The drive to the bridge is well worth doing - a lovely bit of road - and the bridge is free these days so you can do that at least one way.

I've done the West Coast several times in a 3-door Sierra Cosworth. The only ferries I had trouble with were Islay-Jura (I had to reverse on instead of driving) and Brodick-Ardrossan where the ramp officer had to twiddle the hydraulics to get the ramp level enough to get on, and I had to avoid the "blisters" in the deck where they chain down the artics in rough weather. The Mallaig ferry was fine.

(The Cossie gathered a crowd in several places. I don't think they'd seen one before...)

I've used it in a Tam and T350t. You need to approach the ramp to any ferry at an angle so as to lift the front.

I agree with above, it's a great drive up over the bridge, fantastic roads, stop at Eileen Dolan castle for a brew and photo's, come back via ferry. If your lucky on the way back you may come across the Harry potter train from Mallaig, it runs parrallel to the road. Poeple were hanging out of the train waving at us in the Tam.

Why not use the Glenelg ferry instead? smilehttp://www.skyeferry.co.uk/

You have to go through Fort William from the south to reach any of the ferries/bridges in any case. The drive over the Mam Ratagan pass to the Glenelg ferry is a great (single track) road, and you can visit the Glenelg brochs while you're there...

The road on Skye from the other side of the Glenelg ferry (Kylerhea) is pretty good too...

Keeps you away from all the pesky tourists!

My Chimaera's been on many different ferries (including the Arran ferry that Zumbruk had problems with - maybe a tidal thing as I had no such problems). No problems to report with any of them. It hasn't been on the Mallaig - Armadale ferry but I've had a different car on there with no ground clearance problems.

Do they still have the lift on-board? About fifteen years since I last went that route, you used to drive on to a platform at the side of the ship which lowered you down to another deck. I think it took two cars at a time, so loading was a marathon event!

Thanks for the advice guys. Looks like I will be OK. I am planning on heading off the island via the bridge and then over 'the' pass (Belach na or something), trying to plan the route so I dont use the same road twice, within reason of course. Just hoping for dry weather!

Ditto that - did it last year on a 2k tour round the Highlands and no worries on this ferry or any of the others we used. Let me know if you need any tips on the route as I took in the Pass of the Cattle/Applecross, Skye, Mull, Wester Ross, Summer Isles then across to Cairngorms as well.

Surely depends on whether the tide is in or out? But echo the drive - better than any short cut!
