Looks like someone's stuck an airline up the arse of a Proton Gen2 and inflated it. All the disadvantages of a 4x4 with none of the advanteges. The ultimate "look at me, i'm really rich" car.

Tell us which disadvantages you are assuming? and the advantages you believe it to have none of?

For the record I am always keen for an open-minded debate on these cars, but unfortunately these threads usually descend into a bigoted, uninformed and narrow-minded form of mud slinging.

I have to agree entirely with Caboosemoose.

I detest this whole genre of cars. For the most part they serve no purpose other than as Caboose said...."to sell cars". I would add: "To the 'sort' of people that buy them!".

Even where I live which is in England's most rural county these cars (beyond the above purpose) are utterly pointless!

You could name hundreds of cars that are pointless in some peoples eyes, Lambos, Ferrari's, Elise etc etc but we have freedom of choice and all cars appeal to all people in very different ways.

Why is this specific car "utterly pointless"?

I am an enthusiast. You will have seen me contributing to EVO, I've raced cars in different classes over 20 or more years, I have a propensity for buying the kind of indulgent cars that us petrolheads love.

Let me give you an example; I have an AMG ML63 (boo, hiss, what a tosspot!), but I also have a B7 RS4. We recently went skiing for the weekend, family of four plus luggage. I had wanted to take our RS4, but there were two problems; firstly I could not fit snow chains - I would have to have bought a new set of smaller wheels with narrow tyres. And to add to this problem, when everyone plus luggage is loaded the rear end of the RS4 sinks low and makes it feel like navigating a boat (with the front end in the air). Needless to say, the added understeer is not welcome.

We took our ML63 instead. The rear air suspension compensates for the extra load and it feels no different loaded up to the max, than when I'm driving it alone. Performance is unaffected too. When we reached the alps, I pressed a button raised the suspension a few inches and fitted chains to each wheel (none of which fouled the arches or suspension). Given how heavy the recent snowfall was I was glad for 4 chains, rather than 2, and I watched other less fortunate drivers struggle to control their cars in the thick snow. We drove the near 2000 miles over a 3-day weekend, arriving fresh and alert, averaged 16.5mpg which is pretty typical for a 500bhp car, so there was little in the way of penalties at the pumps. I had great fun sliding it around the turns on the way up to Val Thorens and as usual it was the fastest thing on those mountain roads, having a nicely progressive and rear-biased 4WD system. On the way back to blighty we had a nice tussle with a Ferrari F430 who was unable to pull away, despite us reaching very high velocities (and I have a nice little ticket from the Gendarmes to remind me). All in all, my (pointless) SUV did everything I could have asked on a weekend away and its difficult to picture what would have been better - certainly not our B7 RS4, which from experience I know to be slower too.

So, just exactly what is it that you find 'pointless' or 'offensive' about these cars that makes you assume they could not possible appeal to an enthusiast driver?

I guess the only answer that I can rationally give to that is that it is just another addition to an already vast range of utterly pointless similar cars! Which in itself somehow makes it even more "utterly pointless"!

great looking car and ill sure it'll be a great dirve and sure to sell very very well

the people who react negatively are teh very same people that gasped and cried "urggh" when bangle first did his stuff on the 7 and the 5

now a few years down the line evey car on teh road looks like the bangle 7 & 5


same with this car ... there will be a million SUV's that look similar in afew years time. Honda, Lexus, Merc etc.. they will all have an X6 clone in time.

I posted a comparison over on one of the specialist BMW forums, and the basic conclusion was that the X6 35d was slighly quicker than the 530xd Touring, but consumed around 1 litre more fuel every 100km. It is a few thousand pounds more expensive and emits around 20 g/km more Co2 than the 5-series. Otherwise in terms of daily usage they do a similar job. The X6 is slighly 'smaller', just over 200kg heavier, but has advantages over the 5-series depending on how they are used. At the end of the day it depends on what you want from a car and how you use it, but I don't consider I have the right to dictate to anyone which one they should choose.

Yep. Although children is a little inappropriate, they are both accomplished karters and my eldest drives a car himself..
