I could do with adding around 500gb of useable (i.e. 2x500gb in RAID1) drives to my iMac.

USB2 would suffice though Firewire would be nice and should be quicker etc.

My main concern is noise. My iMac is virtually silent and I wouldn't want to end up with a noisy hard drive next to a silent computer.

The G-Drive and Formac XTR range look to fit the bill as an "out the box" solution, though I've no problem with buying an enclosure and adding drives myself - though I want something tasteful, not into "death by 1000 LED's"

Can recommend the Lacie 2Big Triple. Had one for a few weeks now with two 500GB disks running in RAID 1 for Time Machine backup. The disks make some noise when spinning up and there is some fan noise, but it isn't significant (to me at least)

Thanks, right after my post I looked at Lacie and saw that and it went to the top of the list.

Basically the G-Drive is a lot of money in the UK vs. in the US, and the Formac doesn't actually do hardware RAID1, it just presents 2 drives to the OS.
