To ride a Goped on the Road it basically needs Roadtax, Insurance, Brakes, Horn, Lights......etc etc.

It is defined as "A mechanically propelled vehicle intended for use on the Roads for the purposes of the Road Traffic Act"
Courtesy of D of PP v Saddington 2001 RTR227.

Imagine having a few beers and getting stopped riding one of these and losing your licence on something that has a strimmer engine...hmmm.

Its interesting..they're not legal on the road. And I expect they're not legal on public paths too (?).

Lad round our way uses his to get around the estate on paths and so on. Doesn't bother me at all as he doesn't do it irresponsibly quickly or anything...but you should hear how the "angries of Basingstoke" huff and puff about it. Poor bugger - where IS he supposed to use it? In the back garden?

So..are electric ones different in how you are allowed to use them...i.e. is using one on the pavement OK. Actually...is using a Goped legal on the pavement - on the grounds its not road legal?

Bit of a minefield really... There is something to do with a 15mph speed limit.

So where are you supposed to use these???

Private land
I've used mine on local roads, pavements, fields, paddocks, etc.
Must get it fixed actually, it's ideal for nipping to the chippy
The goverment really ought to worry about bigger issues, if they just thought about it gopeds could be an answer to some of our road congestion, I live a fair walk away from a bus stop that could take me into the nearest large town, if I could legally use the goped I could zip to the bus stop, fold it up pop it in it's bag, get on the bus, go to town, then back on the ped to the office, as it is I'll take the car, well actually I take the motorbike but you see the point
And of course the 'getting stopped on a goped' thing requires you to do one thing 'stop' like has been said it's got no reg plate, can do 15mph and can do it down alleyways, can't see the local plod scrambling the chopper to catch me
